Before I graduated from high school, I had a five year plan all thought out for myself. FIrst, I would attend SUNY Albany and obtain a degree in business. Then, I would attend a cosmetology school, get the 1,000 hours needed to take my state board exams, take those exams and get my cosmetology license. All of this would eventually lead to opening my own salon in the future. About a month before my graduation, my mom, 37 at the time, was rushed to the hospital. She had a stroke in the middle of the day at work. When visiting my mother at the hospital, her nurse and I would almost debate the practicality of my dream of becoming a cosmetologist and her chosen career. My family joined sides with the nurse and drilled the idea of nursing …show more content…
On my first day, they had the new class wait together in the salon waiting area until our learning leader could come get us and show us the way to our classroom. The salon was empty and there was no sound besides the upbeat music blasting throughout the school. When we were escorted through the salon and to our classroom, we were greeted by clapping, yelling and high fives from every student and teacher in the school. The energy I felt in that moment was a little overwhelming, but it made me realize that Paul Mitchell was exactly where I needed to be. I was regularly surrounded by future professionals who wanted to learn and learning leaders who wanted to teach and watch us excel. There seemed to be a constant flow of positive energy that I have been able to keep with me even past my time …show more content…
I wanted to absorb every piece of information, every trick and every detail I could. SUNY Albany had made me doubt myself and my abilities, but Paul Mitchell and the learning leaders brought them right back out of me. I will never regret leaving UAlbany or attending Paul Mitchell. The information I learned about myself is as beneficial as everything I was taught about the trade itself. Despite not following my perfectly thought out five year plan, I was able to learn to combat my battles with all of my being. I became more confident and I know it is okay to struggle sometimes. Now, I always remember that even when I feel defeated and like giving up is the only option, there is a lesson to be learned and something better is just around the corner. Attending both SUNY Albany and Paul Mitchell made me ready to take on any challenges that may come my way. I am now able to look towards the future with hope and excitement rather than

As a biracial child in America, I never quite fit in. Growing up in Mendocino,California with exactly one “black” girl (myself) in the entire school, I was the go to for questions about rap music, dance moves and slang. I felt as if I was a representative for the entire African American race even though I am just as white as I am black. Once I left the sheltered bubble of Mendocino, I saw more people that didn’t look like me which left me in an identity crisis, everyone had a community except for me. My African family praised my fairness, and adored my curly tresses, but my white family didn't understand what to do with it.…
