For my high school coach I interviewed Tony Stennett who works as our S.i.d along with being an Assistant coach on the Men’s basketball team. He has also worked as a freshman coach on a high school team. My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

Basketball has been a completely new experience for me. I’d never tried it before and sports that require skills to shoot are not my best to play. One massive thing that helped me get through it, was the fact that I have to ball coordination skills that I was able to use in this instance, another thing was the competition between the teams in our class and cohort, and this is where the interpersonal level of Figueroa’s Framework affects this activity. This extra level of motivation and encouragement from not only your team but your friends really helps you enjoy the sport and what it has to offer.
