Waking up at 6:30 in the morning was never my cup of tea. I will rush to put on clothes and run outside in the foggy, timid weather to wait for my ride for school. I waited anxiously, realizing how tired I was from staying up all night studying for my first chemistry test. Nevertheless, I was ready to ace my test. All I could think of was my mom saying, “Dimond. I am so proud of you for making an A on your first test; keep up the good work”. As teenagers – of all ages and looks - hurried to their classes, I slowly walked in confidence to room 113. The bell went “ding, dong”; I quickly sat down in my seat where my test was face down. Even though I had studied hard for this test, not in a million years I would have thought one bad grade could make me confident, open-minded, and responsible. …show more content…
First day of class, Mrs. Matthews – a short, brown-eyed, sharp woman-gave us a pretest. She said “this test will notify me of how much knowledge you all have in Chemistry”. I thought to myself, “Well we never toke it, so I am sure everyone is going to bomb this”. I sat there staring firmly at this thick, 8-page pretest until the tan walls seems to close in on me. Days went by of going over Unit 1 in the Glencoe Science book; Mrs. Matthews announced our first test date: September 15, 2014. She told us to “prepare and be prepared”. A study guide was handled out, which was worked on in class. The class noticed that temperature conversion – Fahrenheit and Celsius- was not on the study guide. Nervously as I already was I asked, “Is temperature conversions going be on the test?”, Mrs. Matthews replied back “No, do not worry about them since we just learned

Some read the ‘Cliff Notes’ versions while only a few honestly completed this assignment and read the entirety of the book. By the end of 6 weeks, the author finds that the students had become lazy and lethargic. She observes that no one joins in the class discussions and conversations with the vigor and passion that they first did at the start of the experiment. She carries on the class discussions by herself, without any response from her audience. She finds that in the absence of the grading system, students have started slacking, have become more relaxed and did not work hard enough.…

My graduate experience will be light years different then my undergraduate training. I chuckle just contemplating the technological difference alone. Back when I attended undergraduate school there wasn’t the internet, the LoudCloud, e-books, or personal laptop computers. We thought we were “hot stuff” because we progressed from the slide ruler to a state of the art Texas Interment graphing calculator. By the way google informed me that my particular calculator at that time was the first of its kind.…

In order to figure out a list of occupations that strongly interested me, I did a few different things. I wanted to make sure that the occupation would most likely fit my personality and lifestyle rather than just picking random careers. I feel as if it is extremely important to take your time with a topic like this. Your career shapes who you are as a person and you wouldn’t want to be stuck in the wrong career and be unhappy. To be honest, finding a list of careers that strongly interested me was a quite difficult process.…

For many people which career they want to attend college to work towards comes pretty naturally like teaching has always been their passion or they’ve always loved the feeling of being in a kitchen. For me however what I wanted to do as a career and attend college for didn’t come as naturally. I explored many ideas like becoming a chef. But I soon found out that I could burn water and therefore cooking wasn’t exactly my strong suit. Last year in December when I went running at 5am around my neighborhood, I wasn’t thinking about how cold or dark it was. The peacefulness allowed my mind to wander and question the science behind my surroundings. As I passed a house adorned with Christmas colored lights, I noticed a strand of lights had burned out. The question of why it only had a strand and not all the lights burned out lingered in my mind. It took me a few minutes before I had the aha moment when I remembered being taught about circuits in Honors Physics.…

It is the second term of my junior year, and my homeroom teacher is passing out report cards. As she calls my name and hands me the bright pink sheet of paper, I almost instinctively grab it from her and stuff it into my backpack without so much as a peek. I did not need to look; I knew where my grades stood, and they were abominable at best. Most frightening, however, were not the grades themselves, but the fact that I had so trivial an emotional response. By this point in my high school career I had seemingly given up on myself entirely.…
