Personal Narrative: A Career As An X-Ray Technician

From the second grade I thought I wanted to be a Veterinarian when I grew up. Of course no one would expect a second grader to know such details, but as I went through high school my mind never strayed away from my future goal. Senior year I got the opportunity to intern at Big Goose Veterinary Clinic where I fell in love with the practice even more. I scrubbed in on surgerys, interacted with clients, and cuddled up on animals all day. It was not until I started noticing how exhausted the doctor's always were before I changed my mind. There was so much stress emotionally and physically on them at all times that it seemed like it was hard for them to ever really enjoy time to themselves. Most Technicians work in hospitals running MRI scanners and taking X-Rays of patients. Depending on the hospital that I would be working at, I could be on call meaning that I could be paged to come into work at any moment in time. Although this can cause a lot of conflict with friends and family, emergencies outweigh most predicaments. There is a great deal of technology involved within this career, so employees must be able to understand and keep up with the constant upgrades throughout the years. It is very important not to make any mistakes because you could potentially endanger someone’s safety or tamper with financial affairs. Communication is a key component to this occupation as well. Not only do technicians have to communicate with their doctors and associates, but they also need to be able to consult the patient in an orderly way. There are always going to be difficult clients who get upset and frustrated and the last thing they need is for someone to confront them unprofessionally. As of 2015 the median pay was $58,120 a year or $27.94 an hour which is decent enough to live a leisurely life off of. The more experience that you have the better chance of getting raises and
