When one considers the actions of the famous Christopher Columbus or Amerdigo Vespucci, one is normally opted to recall one or both of them as the man who discovered the United States of America. However, as history clearly shows, this is not the case for either one of these famous explorers; the lands that would become the United States had been discovered and inhabited long before either of their voyages. The Native Americans, ironically misbranded as Indians by Columbus, can trace their history of this land back much further than the colonists are able. It is no surprise, therefore, that the Native Americans are a popular subject among colonial authors. Three authors who write extensively concerning these original settlers of American Land…

Critical Analysis: Charles C. Mann wrote 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus after finding inaccuracies in his high school textbook. The inaccuracies within prompted him to reexamine contemporary historical beliefs. Mann’s 1491 is a social demonstration, utilizing modern theories to explain pre-Columbian societies. Furthermore, 1491 is a journalistic representation of Mesoamerica and the Aztecs, Inka, Maya, and other Inuit communities of the Americas.…

A commonly known history rhyme, “Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in the year 1492” easily reminds individuals of a perceived ‘hero’s’ great voyage. School textbooks describe how Christopher Columbus’s two-month journey to Asia in search of jewels and spice was routed incorrectly and he inadvertently landed on North American soil. The news of Christopher’s discovery of new land traveled quickly and many arrived in America to force the Indigenous Indians from their occupied land. Since Christopher’s discovery of the land on October 12, 1492, many Americans celebrate his controversial colonization with an honorary day on the national calendar.…

One voyage that is brought up in every history class is Columbus “discovering” the New World. It is said that Christopher Columbus founded America, but in reality people have been living in the New World long before Columbus “discovered” it. Columbus’ discovery changed the way the Native Americans and Europeans lived. When Columbus landed in America, he wrote a letter to the King Sanchez and Queen Isabella.…

Chapter 1 of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States discusses the lives of natives of the Americas both prior to and after the arrival of European explorers, and includes a statement by the author on writing history. To begin, Christopher Columbus’s voyages to the Americas are covered heavily in the chapter, and I consider these themes regarding him to be the most important: • “The information that Columbus wanted most was: Where is the gold? He had persuaded the king and queen of Spain to finance an expedition to the lands, the wealth he expected would be on the other side of the Atlantic—the Indies and Asia, gold and spices” (Zinn 2) and “In addition for bringing back gold and spices, they promised Columbus 10 percent of the profits, governorship over newfound lands, and the fame that would go with a new title: Admiral of the Ocean Sea” (2). These passages explain Christopher Columbus’s motivation for setting sail for his first trip, which was acquiring rare goods to take back to Spain for wealth and…

The oppression of smaller communities and individuals by the larger states leads to an inherent support of nationalism in the narrative of history; as a result, the assumption of the viewpoint of smaller communities allows for an unexplored historical perspective. By attempting to understand the perspective of smaller communities during the efforts to colonize and explore the Americas, Zinn introduces the importance of historical interpretation to his approach to narrating history. Despite his typical treatment as a hero and pioneer for his discovery of America, Christopher Columbus established a precedent of brutality towards the Arawak communities by commanding “all persons… to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months,” upon…

In the chapter ‘Forget Columbus’ of the book ‘The Inconvenient Indian’, the author Thomas King writes about his point of view on the forgotten history of the Native Americans. He conveys about the tales made up about the natives and americans engraved in the history to mainly appeal to the white audience. The author starts the chapter by telling how insignificant was the discovery of the land of natives made by Columbus. According to him the only reason why he was given credit and recognized because his story as Columbus sailing the oceans, travelling across with interesting adventures and going through hardships with a letter to the Emperor of Indies by the King and Queen of Spain captured the imagination of the audience and met the expectations…
