I’ve run, wishing to be the fastest; lifted, wishing to be the strongest; unfortunately, such intentions were, in majority, only fantasies. At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Although I originally planned on majoring in education to teach math and science at the middle and high school levels, my interests have shifted to focus on sports therapy/physical therapy due to my involvement in sports. After participating in multiple high school sports such as football, basketball, and track & field, I developed a passion to work in sports. The sequence throughout my high school career that really inspired me to participate in sports was my senior year in high school when I placed 4th at the state championships in the men’s high jump competition. That day at the state championships, I was not only inspired by myself, but also the many other star athletes that participated throughout the track meet. Throughout that particular meet, I built relationships with star athletes such as C.J. Spiller who currently plays professional football for the New Orleans Saints, and also Jeffery Demps who plays professional football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.…

Making It to the Big Time I am Vincent Crabtree. When I was a freshman in High School, I participated in an activity called “Winter Percussion”. It was much like marching band, but it took place during the winter and spring season, and it featured a smaller ensemble composed mostly of percussive instruments. Throughout the season, we had practice almost nightly, working to put together a show that would be performed in competition with other drumlines.…

Growing up and playing soccer my entire life, I can personally explain to anyone how difficult the game really is. However, when I step on the soccer field Saturday mornings to volunteer, I know the players participating have a set of unique challenges that make their accomplishments truly extraordinary. That's because every Saturday I volunteer at the nonprofit organization RVACCESS, which helps provide special needs athletes the opportunity to play soccer. I first found out about the program four years ago and was amazed at what a difference it made for the athletes and their parents.…

At the beginning of my junior year of McNeil High School I qualified to be on varsity and was put into the varsity soccer class for one month. I trained with the returning varsity players and learned from our varsity coach. However, at the term of that month I had received a statement that I did not have the capability to become a varsity player and would be moved down to junior varsity. This remains as one of the toughest setbacks that I have faced in my life. Due to this failure, I joined a competition in the club Health Occupations Students of America called Healthy Lifestyles.…

I was never the fastest competitor on the team, never the one with the lofty goal of achieving an Olympic medal, or compete at the international level. I wasn’t a natural by any means, but I knew how to work hard, and when I put in the effort and I could get results. The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…
