When considering what career I wanted to achieve I was given a substantial amount of advice; starting with choosing something that you are passionate about and ending with researching everything you can about what you want to do. Whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, nice, funny, the way you present yourself is the way others will see you. “Now if you’ve got a crooked nose, let them know and / that will be all they notice.” (37-38).…

A third potential way I see this article by Jessica Lahey relating to me is as a future. I may be young, but not too young to think about how my upbringing and temperament may impact my future parenting style. I think myself and others my age should take this piece and think about the magnitude of the advice the author is offering. I do not want to be the mom who puts her children at a disadvantage by never letting them stand on their own two feet. I have a strong maternal instinct and desire to protect.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

After a long year, I finally was back at La Semana, a week long adoption camp for kids from Latin American countries. After the joyous reunion hugs and hellos, I headed off to my classroom that I would be helping in. Glancing out the window I instantly knew that it was one of those picture perfect days. The sun already shining, and a cool breeze just strong enough to lightly brush through my hair. Back in the classroom however, the temperature was not so pleasant.…

Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process.…

One thing that I have not considered before was when it is around Christmas time, and people do the adopt a family, that some families, but not all did not like it when we gave their families free Christmas gifts for their children. It was mostly the father of the house hold that did not like it at all, because that made the father feel like he could not provide for his family. When it was time to open present the father would go upstairs and go to his room, and if his children ask their mother where their father was, the mother would always lie and say that he left and went to the grocery store, and he would be right back. Even though he was right upstairs, the mother did not want to explain why the father did not want to be down stairs while they were opening up their gifts. I just never considered it that way.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…
