Personal Narrative: A Career As A Tennis Player

Improved Essays
An activity that is very significant to me is tennis. I began playing tennis in my freshman year, and to my surprise I was the only girl in my county that wanted to play. I was then placed on the boy’s tennis team, and competed in an all men’s conference. This was a unique and transforming experience for me. I was able to compete with people that were much more advanced than me, and I was able to learn and grew from my matches. I wanted to be seen as competition to my opponents, not just a small, inexperienced girl. I hated this stereotype, and it motivated me to work much harder to be seen in a different perspective. Even though, I wasn’t on the same skill level as most of the other players, I learned much more than I thought possible. I developed …show more content…
Through my tenth grade tennis season, I spent my time working with the new girls so they could quickly learn and compete with other competitors that had been playing much longer. Many of the girls that I helped were then able to teach the newer students just joining the team. We worked hard, and even though we were definitely not the best team, we had fun and learned from each other. The next year, which was my eleventh grade year, many of the girls from the year before had graduated and we couldn’t get enough members in time for the new season. So I spent my free time practicing for the next year and trying out new sports. I made sure that for my final year, that we would have a girl’s team. I went around my school recruiting new girls to come out and play, and we were able to get together a team. This last season was vital to me, as I wanted to push my boundaries and work towards improving my abilities. I was able to win many more matches, and motivate my team to work hard. This last year was one of my most challenging years yet, but I put all my effort into doing my best in all my activities and

I learned that winning a tennis match is all about mentality. I had to constantly push myself or the opponent could easily capitalize on my mistakes. Just like in a match, tennis taught me to be patient and accomplish each goal point by point. I was hesitant to join cross-country because I would have been the heaviest person…

I was standing by myself on the bright green tennis court, gripping my racket. Groups of other tennis players were leaning against the chain link fence, waiting, like me, for tryouts to begin. Listening intently to the conversation going on around me, I was trying to get absorbed into what was going on. After what felt like forever, but in reality was only minutes a friend of mine and returning player walked over to me. Having not seen each other in a month or so we both greeted each other enthusiastically.…

From grades five to eleven, I participated in band, badminton, and yearbook. Because of my experience growing up in music, I decided I would take part in band where I was able to travel with our school to participate in competitions. Some of those competitions were at Canada’s Wonderland and other local events. Along with the band, I participated in our school’s badminton team. One year, in particular, my teammate and I made it to the semi-finals and ranked second place out of all the school teams in the Ottawa area.…

To this day some of my favorite memories growing up was watching the Masters golf tournament with my dad or just hitting plastic golf balls in the backyard. Golf was the game I loved ever since I was a little boy. That's the reason why getting cut from the golf team freshman year hurt so bad. I was numb with an empty depressed feeling inside me. Getting cut from the golf team taught me that in my darkest moments giving up would be easy, however with perseverance and dedication any goal can be accomplished.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

One of my most memorable activities I ever chose to do was to go to an Inclusive communities camp over a weekend where we learned about diversity and the true mean of being equal and how important it is to have a diverse community and how it can lead to lots of depth. Just because someone isn’t as good at sports it doesn’t mean that they can’t be good in other things such as robotics or developing software. Beings able to communicate to all these different types of people with these different talents can be very beneficial to…

The soft green grass under my feet, the cool breeze running over me, the warmth of the sun shining its rays on my face... Lost in my thoughts of form and grip, contemplating yardage, angle and loft, dreaming of my future, I am at peace, I am on the golf course. When I was four years old, my dad put a club in my hand and a ball at my feet, since then, I have loved and despised the game of golf. From the moment I was introduced to the game, I was hooked and while many view it simply as ‘a game’, I have been fortunate enough to take much more away from the course.…

It is my philosophy that hard work will always pay off sooner or later. Whether it be physical or mental, the reward is correspondent to the amount of effort put in. In 10th grade, I had back surgery that rendered my back weak. I set the very difficult goal of regaining my strength and working hard the next year in order to make varsity the following year. My ambition moved me to go to physical therapy and give it 110%.…
