Personal Narrative: A Career As A Teen Counselor

Improved Essays
After the adoption of my sister, we discovered a culture camp by the adoption agency not only my two sisters were adopted from, but my mother also. I first became a camper at this culture camp in the third grade. I loved spending time with other campers, teen counselor, and teachers. A couple of years later now in the seventh grade, it was time to go from a camper to a teen counselor, I now had the chance to be a teen counselor, like the counselors I had. It wasn’t easy becoming a counselor, for a bunch of elementary students. I had always been one of the quiet campers of the groups, so having to interact with the highly energized wasn't easy. After my first years of being a teen counselor, I later went on to be a teen counselor at many other …show more content…
If they don't respect you, then they did not listen to instructions very well. If they listened well, them they would have an amazing time at camp. The size of the camps varied from forty campers to 200 campers. I do believe that I will continue as a teen counselor at these camps. As teen counselor I grew in maturity, and communication skills. I love getting to know the campers, and spending time with them. I once helped a lost crying camper that wasn't in my group find his way back. I would tell young people that being a teen counselor, helped me grow as an individual. It's an amazing feeling when younger people look up to you. Another place of volunteer work is with the Precious Child Foundation. As an aspiring teen entrepreneur, I have started printing t-shirts and donating fifty percent of my profit to charity. I have donated an estimate of $500 to the Precious Child Foundation through my t-shirt printing. I also helped start a fundraiser through the Precious Child Foundation three years ago. After living in Ghana, Africa for three months, we came home changed in our hearts. My siblings and I were inspired, and wanted to make a change, having always taught to do …show more content…
We will continue to have this fundraiser every year, because there are still people that need clean water. My entrepreneurial skills, and the passion grew stronger as I helped start this fundraiser. I will forever remember the change, and the awareness I am helping bring about the need for clean water. I want other young people to think about their lives. I would talk to them and help them remember how lucky they are born in a country where they don't have to suffer, like other children in the world. That they can help change, and improve the lives of others, because of their freedoms. I am also a golf mentor at the First Tee of Tulsa. I have been the First Tee of Tulsa since the age of ten, and love the game of golf. This volunteer work I basically have fun learning to respect others, my surroundings, and myself. There is not really a hard part of this volunteer work, but it is very important for reputation of The First Tee of Tulsa. Every Week at the Mohawk Park golf course the mentors, help pick up driving range balls by hand. We do any work that Southern Hills Country Club ask us to do, with a

Kids across the nation are standing out and making a difference. Whether its just picking up around the community or starting a foundation people can make a difference. Many people think kids are just in the way and don’t ever actually make a difference in their community. Blare Gooch started with a teddy bear, Alex Scott started with a cup of lemonade, and Zach Hunter started with a few pennies around his house. The smallest things can turn into a life changing difference.…

Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

Wes Moore had a lot of caring friends with big hearts that had determination and drive to helping others. His friend started a clothing company to help single, low income mothers by providing an income for their families by making apparel for the company American MOJO. I think our university community can learn a lot from this and contribute by hosting a clothing or shoe drive for our local families. We could do this by donating our clothes or shoes to individuals that are less fortunate or lower income that can’t provide for their families like they would like to. Another story that Mr. Moore shared with us was about his Veteran friends John and Dale and how they started building homes for disabled service Veterans.…

Growing up with girls who had similar backgrounds as me, I was able to gain more than I imagined from being in such a diverse environment like Girls Who Code. Through IBM, I met professionals from the business and tech industries and was exposed to the working world, an opportunity I would’ve never had in the confines of summer camp.…
