Personal Narrative: A Career As A Summer Counselor

Decent Essays
My first job was working a summer at my mothers preschool when I was 14. Since then I have always been drawn to working with children. I grew up being a Girl Scout and eventually was a co-leader with my sister in 2006-2007. I then went on to working two summers as a camp counselor/lead counselor for Girl Scouts. It was then that I realized I had a passion to see the aw in a child’s eye when they learn or discover something new. I was able to guide them to make new discoveries not only about the things we were learning but also about themselves. I got to watch as they tried new things, explored the unfamiliar, and step out of the boxes they had been in. Those summers are some of the greatest memories I have. I have always said, “If I could be a summer counselor year round, I would.” This is what has lead to the dream of becoming a part of the education …show more content…
I had twin girls in 2012 and have been a stay at home mom since they were eight months old. Although being a mother has it ups and downs I would not trade the experience for anything. It has tested my patience, stretched my creativity, and taught me more than I can comprehend. Being a mother has shown me first hand the challenges that come with working with children but the reward in the end is unbelievable. When I left the Coast Guard in 2013 my family moved home and began attending Pathways Community Church. I immediately began volunteering with in the toddler’s room and in high school ministry. While serving in the high school room, I was able to find out first hand what it was like to work with older kids. I was there for over a year before left high school ministry and I started volunteering with the elementary children’s ministry. Upon inquiry of working with the elementary children I was offered an internship position. Since then I have been able to lead first service, teach, pick curriculum, and help plan church wide

I continued to look for a place to serve more in and help more people but I could not find anything that really interested me. When he asked me to help him along with a few others to grow the student ministry I was ecstatic. He had told us that we were the seven like there were the twelve. I think this is my greatest accomplishment as a leader because even though I was a young student he saw a leader unlike many adults that normally think kids should be put to smaller tasks.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…

When I first heard of the $25,000 challenge I was excited yet hesitant. It was definitely a nice change from the previous assignments; however, focusing on what qualities I possess that set me apart from the rest of my peers, deeming me worthy of such a substantial amount of money, still seems wrong. On the other hand, I, being the wonderful student that I am, must put all moral objections to the back of my magnificent mind and get on my high horse to step up to the challenge. One does not have to search high and low to find a good, no, great student. I sport a 4.0 GPA and have never made below a 95 in any of my high school courses.…

For a long time, I had been fascinated with children and how they think and how resilient they are at such a young age. I began to notice this at around the age of 13 when I began babysitting for family friends’ children. As I began to realize that I love being around children, I began to look into career fields that involve children Throughout my high school and college career, I continued to work with kids, I volunteer with many youth organizations through my school, such as the child care center on campus. The most impactful experience for me occurred while I was a sophomore in High School, a young boy that I attend school with was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia. Learning to succeed is the main focus that schools teach through the academic school year: in school and life. That's what's taught from elementary school to high school. During the summer of 2017 at The School of Engineering, I had to face obstacles that emerged from out of nowhere while also trying to build a functional robot. While working on the project, I was challenged and taught lessons that are not developed in basic studies.
