Personal Narrative: A Career As A Sports Coach

Decent Essays
The scope of power and prestige was present in my summer coaching job because both Tommy and I were equal status individuals working together to complete the task which was ultimently to have the team win more games. Although I do play in a higher division of college baseball which lead me to believe that there was a high expectation of me from others involved in the organization, players on the team and parents, I do believe that tommy and I were of equal status when it came to coaching. I felt the needed to step in and perform at a higher level of coaching because of my expericene within the organization, having a better knowledge of the players on the team and as feeling the needed to really help the team when the head coach was not available

The situation I will be sharing of where the power and prestige theory was presented is my summer baseball coaching job. This past summer I hired as an assistant coach for a 17 year old Long Island baseball team. The organization that the team was affiliated with was an organization that I have been involved with since the very beginning of my baseball career. Besides myself there was also another college baseball player that attended and played baseball at a local division III university, hired to be the other assistant coach and a local high school was hired as the head coach. During the summer league it was my job as well as the other assistant coach, Tommy, to run practices and help out during games.…

People coming from a different planet would think every day things we do in life are weird. What we have adapted to and think are normal look very weird to others who haven’t seen people doing things like this. Such as someone who has never shaved before would think that is very odd to shave your beard. Or someone who has never seen a drive threw would think it’s weird to have people have food handed out the window. As we think other cultures are weird we have to look at the fact that our culture is weird to others People that have never seen basketball would thing it is a bunch of people running around with a ball.…

Coaching youth basketball has given me an opportunity to help young kids learn to love basketball. In Coach Rick’s after school basketball program we stress positivity, teamwork, and inclusion rather than the success of the individual. Mistakes are encouraged, not looked down upon. Helping kids with difficult attitudes become team-oriented and positive carries beyond the basketball court. Coaching in the same program that I played in has helped shape my attitude towards everything: positivity, learning from failure, and bringing up those less talented than others.…

I was the youngest and only knew my sister. At the first practice, I was nervous to the point where I was sweaty without even moving due to my fear of everyone else being better than me. My sister and I found out that we were on Ken’s team.…

It wasn’t the position I wanted, but a job is a job, right? At least, that’s what I told myself then. Assistant Head Pre-Team Coach is a very flashy title, but really I was just teaching kids how to swim. The first few days were hard; the water was so cold. These tiny 5- and 6-year-olds can’t keep themselves warm while in the pool, so the first week of practices were all very brief.…

Being five foot eight inches tall isn’t a bad thing, unless you’re trying to play 8A high school football. Playing football at such a high level and at my size is extremely challenging. It took me some convincing at the lunch table, and after the first couple spring workouts I realized how much effort I would have to put in to make it. Through hard work and effort along with a lot of food and protein I made it on the junior varsity team. I played well in JV, so my junior year I was moved up to varsity which is a completely different league of its own.…

As I walked up to the plate, I wiped the beads of sweat dripping from my head while I was looking at my 3rd base coach and he gave me the sign to wait to swing till after the first strike. I felt butterflies in my stomach as I stepped into the batters box. The first pitch was a strike and then the next three pitches were balls. The kid that batted in front of me had the same count count and he got a changeup down the middle and hit the ball to right field.…

As a little girl the things i wanted most in my life were to become the first female in the NBA, marry Morris Chestnut, and to make enough money to buy my mother all the houses we ever got evicted from and all the companies that ever fired her. Since I now know i will never be in the NBA, and I’ve probably sent Morris enough fan mail since the third grade to obtain a restraining order, I've decided to help others achieve their sports dreams while still managing to make my last dream come true. Being a sports agent is something I've thought long and hard about. Not only will I be holding the wellbeing of my family in my hands but also the wellbeing of the athletes that spend countless amounts of their time on the court, in the weight room,…
