Personal Narrative: A Career As A Social Worker

When I think back to the mid-eighties, I remember being this young confused, desperate

kid in hopes for a better way of life. How I could not fully comprehend why my life was so

different from others’ seemingly happy existence. I became aware and consumed by everything

and everyone’s approach to life’s happiness. Inquisitive by nature, I became determined in

knowing what life ingredients would need to be blended in order to be happy. What I discovered

along the way, would solidify why I was meant to become a man of passion in helping everyone

I could, in finding their life’s happiness.

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I remember seeing a Counselor or Social

Worker for that matter, as a young kid and feeling immediately

This deep and significant personal experience would soundly shape my beliefs, to

always be a man of thoughtful convictions in helping those in dire need.

There have been other amazing situations that have truly left me perplexed. For instance,

there hasn’t been a time (professional or casual setting), that I can remember where I’m not

asked “Are you Mexican”? It’s interesting to think, that an individual can simply look at me

and ask if “I’m Mexican”. The ignorance is clearly, in most cases no fault of the individual. I

couldn’t possibly lay blame on individuals, not fully informed on the existence of Latino or other

rich cultural differences. This experience would lead me to always approach individuals with

the idea of soundly educating those that need it, while embracing all cultural differences for its

wonderful value. The very values of strength, understanding, with a passionate approach to
