In the summer of 2014 I spent a whole week out in the blazing sun only to return with several blisters, a bad sunburn, and a sense of pride. During that week I was assigned to rebuilding recreational parks in areas which desperately needed it. I worked hard to paint the benches and clean up the street, just hoping I would help touch a permanent residents heart from the difficult work I was doing. My question had been answered my second day on the job, while I was slapping a fresh coat of royal blue paint on the hot metal bench. A woman approached me and said a few words that still linger in my mind to this day. “Why do you try? Barely anybody in the community cares.”
