Personal Narrative: A Career As A Soccer Coach

People never really realize what all goes into the job of coaching. Coaching is a job everyone overlooks as being one of many simple careers. No matter what sports a person coaches, they go through things that other people have no idea about. Although many people do not think coaching can be a difficult position, a lot more goes into the line of work than most people imagine. Coaching has been one of my career ideas after high school, and it is from my high school coaches that I learn what coaching really is all about. Soccer has always been my main interest throughout my childhood and teenage years. For this reason, I decided to combine these things, and get the brief insight life of a soccer coach. Well, that’s not the case in this situation. Coach Etl, as I call her, did not play soccer at any time during her childhood, or even her teen years, and that shocked me. Coaches like her, who know as much as they do about the game, have generally played for years and years, which was why I was so impressed when she informed me she had barely ever played. When Coach Etl went to college, she went to get her coaching degree. I dug a little more into that, and was questioning what made her want to be a coach in the first place, and why soccer, if she never even played it? Coach Etl had been around coaching for a long time. Her mom was a P.E. teacher, as well as a coach for multiple sports. Coach Etl, herself, liked to coach young teams. She was a coach for a club gymnastics team, and found that she loved to see the kids work hard and see success. When she was in college, she was taking a class to teach physical education, and for that, she had to play soccer, on the occasion that she would teach it. After actually being in the game, she began to realize that she really enjoyed it. While teaching P.E., she was offered the position as an assistant coach for the girls soccer
