Personal Narrative: A Career As A Small Animal Veterinarian

What made me interested in the processes of the major duties of a small animal veterinarian is my love for every cat, ferret, and fish that I had while I was growing up. Ever since I was four years old I’ve been interested in which animals people could have as pets and what is need to take care of them. I also would what are things I could have done as a pet owner to keep my pet happy and healthy. My pass is the reason why I want to be a veterinarian now. To find the processes of the major duties of a small animal veterinarian I turn to sources such as library books, medical websites, and a volunteer spot at an adoption center. These sources helped me answer my essential question and gain experience with working hands on with small non-human animals.

The first step to spaying is a “small incision is made on the lower part of the abdomen” (The Vet House 1), Once the incision is made, the veterinarian moves the internal organs and muscles that are covering the ovaries. When the ovaries are located, both it and the uterus are “tied off and then removed using a scalpel” (The Vet House 1). The last step to spaying is closing the incision with sutures. This spaying process is true for both female cats and female dogs. The steps to neuter a male pet is slightly different than spaying. For male cats, “one or two incisions can be made, usually just enough to slide the testes through” (The Vet House 1). The first step to neutering a dog is a “large incision is usually made, and the testes are pushed up to be removed” (The Vet House 1). To complete the neutering process for both cats and dogs, the Incision is closed with sutures” (The Vet House
