Personal Narrative: A Career As A Resident Advisor

Improved Essays
As a Resident Advisor, I have supervisory responsibilities over the residents staying in Bromley Hall for athletic summer camps. Campers range from ages 8 to 18 years of age. There are three main tenets to Bromley Hall’s philosophy for resident advisors--effective communication, listening, and consistency-- all of which I believe I effectively model. I work with a team of eighteen other resident advisors to coordinate check-in and check-out procedures, night activities, and floor meetings for the campers. Ultimately, the most important responsibility I have is ensuring the safety and security of Bromley Hall and its residents. I was required to attend a week long orientation addressing every possible situation that could be thrown my way as

As I entered my senior year of undergrad, I began looking for an opportunity to work with people requiring any form of health care assistance. Luckily, I came across an opening for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA) position in the school newspaper. At the time, I didn’t know exactly what a PCA was, but I knew I wanted to work one-on-one with patients, and this job would allow me to do exactly that. After I went through all the training that was required, it was finally time to meet my client. The only details my supervisor told me about my client were: his name, that I would be assisting in driving him around in his handicap accessible van, getting him dressed, monitoring him during his walking exercises, and that he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy as a child and was bound to a wheelchair.…

Move-in day was the highlight of my college career. As a freshman, I was preparing for a new term and feeling the eagerness for a new beginning. The transition from a traditional-styled home, to a communal dormitory space, is the start of one’s direction to adulthood and independence. Presiding in the learning community of Alvarez Hall forged me into the person I am today. Encountering a mixture of individuals with different sets of personalities and beliefs, allowed me to appreciate the culture and diversity the housing provides in order to cultivate the young minds of the future generation.…

Between February 2013 and January 2014, I worked at four different organizations as an interim administrative assistant. At each of these jobs I answered phones using a multi-line phone system, used a multifunction copier, used Microsoft Word for all the word processing projects, used Microsoft Excel for lists and data that required calculations, and used either Microsoft Outlook, GroupWise, or Lotus for email and calendar. At one organization I used Microsoft Publisher to create a color coded grid for Draft Day activities with leadership responsibilities and I identified an online software program for creating organizational charts. At one of the organizations I recommended a change to the expense form and the accounting department approved and implemented the change. At one of the…

My job as a Resident Advisor is to create an environment that is welcoming to all of my residents. This task is both exciting and daunting since one can have a floor made up of residents coming from all over the country, representing different backgrounds and socioeconomic upbringings. To build this environment you must get to know the residents and develop a true understanding of the background and diversity they bring to the floor. One of the moments that stuck out to me while trying to build this environment came from a conversation about Indian dance and the Punjabi culture. I was with a resident checking to see how she was adjusting to being away from home when she told how she found her fit on this team called Buckeye Bhangra.…

I have been a nursing assistant for 25 years and have been told by many nurses and supervisors that I should go back to school to become a nurse. I have always been the aide that wants to learn more, if the nurses needed an extra set of hands or help of any kind I was always the first one to volunteer. I probably drove many nurses’ nuts always asking questions. When I was younger I had no desire to become a nurse and then kept putting off going back to school. I would say someday but never do it.…

What does it take to become a “Govie” as students at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics generally refer to themselves? During my visit to the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital I met a very pleasant patient at the recreational area, there was a pool table so I asked him to join me in a game to which he agreed. While playing he told me about how he had been in the hospital for several months but was a few weeks away from being discharged, we talked about his depression and anxiety, about his life and plans for the future, at the end, our interaction seemed to raise his spirits. It really helped me that we covered therapeutic communication not so long ago in lab and that same morning in pre-conference as well, so I got to apply the paraphrasing, active listening, self-disclosure, humor and active listening. Generally, I struggle in creating relationships with others and the language barrier makes things even worse.…
