During my visit to the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital I met a very pleasant patient at the recreational area, there was a pool table so I asked him to join me in a game to which he agreed. While playing he told me about how he had been in the hospital for several months but was a few weeks away from being discharged, we talked about his depression and anxiety, about his life and plans for the future, at the end, our interaction seemed to raise his spirits. It really helped me that we covered therapeutic communication not so long ago in lab and that same morning in pre-conference as well, so I got to apply the paraphrasing, active listening, self-disclosure, humor and active listening. Generally, I struggle in creating relationships with others and the language barrier makes things even worse. It’s kind of hard to make a person open up to tell you about his life and such, even more when this person is someone you have never met before, However, I do realize that as a nurse I will meet new people all the time and being able to stablish a therapeutic relationship is important, so I need to boost my relationship skills to become a better nurse. This experience taught me that getting to know someone is easier when there is a medium both parties enjoy, in …show more content…
The therapist would encourage the patients to share their stories and thoughts about their own paintings and got to play some Led Zeppelin as the patients wanted. I did not get to say much unlike last time, since remaining silent seemed to be the better choice to allow patients to just keep sharing while the rest just would just listen. Overall, I believe the experience gave me a better understanding of the areas I need to improve to become a better nurse and meet the needs of the patient, also how to differentiate between therapeutic communications from a social

As a future register nurse and as a woman I feel that a have a tremendous responsibility to give back to my community. I believe that one of the most forgotten populations in our community is the elderly, and as a society we have so much to learn from them and to thank them for what they did in the past. I strongly believe that if I could make some positive changes I would decide to do them to influence some senior citizens’ lives and to change their isolation for companion and thankfulness. I would advocate for the elderly with our authorities and I would request a budget to build a clinic to provide preventive health care services for them. I would designate a budget to build a nursing home for the elderly that do not have a place to…

Although I have significant space for improvement in all areas I am confident my skills will only become stronger with each interaction. Each aspect and capacity of communication I discussed is intertwined with the components of relational practice, those of which carried my friend from a dark place of pain and suffering to healing and acceptance. As a nurse, I want to strive to determinedly incorporate each of the aspects into all of my interpersonal, intrapersonal and contextual relations. Nurses have the capacity to influence people’s most vulnerable lived experiences. I want the individuals I interact with to feel heard, understood and supported throughout their transitions and hardships.…

Patients would come in up to three times a week over a number of months, sometimes even years. A large portion of the visits consisted of discussions that revolved around plans for the day, sharing stories, and even venting about personal problems, making it obvious that a friendship had developed between the two. It was so much more than just a routine interaction, as the uptight professionalism was replaced with casual conversations. The bond between a patient and occupational therapist is more complex than I had initially imagined, and the fact that an occupational therapist can play a part, no matter how small, in improving his or her patients’ lives excites and inspires me. When a patient chooses a therapist, he or she is being invited to participate in another’s life story.…

The first day of clinical I was extremely nervous. Also the fact that English is not my first language and that I do have an accent, I was nervous about the fact that I would mispronounce something or just make some grammatical error that would make me sound not as smart. Because we did not have many patients that day, I was teamed up with a classmate and that did make me feel better, knowing that I was not going into a patient’s room by myself. At first I was not saying much, but has the morning progressed, I was becoming more confident in my abilities to communicate with my patients. Throughout this clinical experience I believe that my communication skills with the patients improved and on one of the last days of clinical, one of the patients asked me if I was almost finished with nursing school because I looked really confident.…

Nurse Mentorship A mentor is an experienced and usually older person who guides and supports a younger or a less experienced person towards a goal (Harrington, 2011, p. 169). Nurse mentors guide and support less experienced nurses to understand and improve their careers (Taylor, 2014, p. 29). In my nursing carrier I have had several mentors some of which were my instructors but the most influential mentor I have had and continue to work with is a nurse educator at my hospital. The process through which the nurse educator became my mentor developed informally during orientation for my first nursing job and she has remained my primary career adviser, counselor and trainer ever since.…

During my last visit to the Trenton Psychiatric Hospital I had the pleasure to meet the same gentleman I met last Saturday, we played pool a couple of times as before and later I asked him to meet me outside in a more private location to help me answering questions for a nursing assessment Professor Ruocco had us doing. Because we met before we had a therapeutic relationship and the questions where easier to ask, like the use of restrains in the past, family history and the situation that got him to be in the hospital, questions that were difficult to ask someone without prior knowing him, again I got to practice my therapeutic techniques like active listening and asking open-ended questions. Overall I believe I am getting competent with communication,…
