Personal Narrative: A Career As A Nuclear Pharmacists

I shadowed at the Radiopharmacy of Indianapolis during summer break and had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Kevin Boyd. Dr. Boyd spent 2 hours introducing the industry of nuclear pharmacy to me and went through his job description and duties. Through my experience, I learned that although nuclear pharmacy also works with drugs, it is a whole lot different from other pharmacy settings.

The major differences that set nuclear pharmacy apart are the type of drug the pharmacy carry, the size of the industry, operating hours and schedules, the delivery system the pharmacy run, and the type of customers they interact with. Nuclear pharmacy is a very small industry of pharmacy that specializes in radioactive drugs. Nuclear pharmacists have no interaction with patients since only hospitals and other large institutions will order drug from nuclear pharmacies, and they usually order through an online system. Angela. From my experience, I have learned that retail pharmacists need a wider range of skills than pharmacists of other settings. Those skills include management, leadership, business, communication, and people skills. Management and leadership skills are needed because retail pharmacists have to run the pharmacy and oversee the technicians at the same time. Business skills are needed for running payment transactions and ordering drug from manufacturers. Communication skills are needed because pharmacists have to contact the patients and doctors personally in regards to drugs and prescription conflicts. Retail pharmacists also need a lot more people skill because they have a lot more opportunities to interact with patients. There are many people who come and trust the pharmacist's decision on what type of drug to take for a certain condition.
