Personal Narrative: A Career As A High School Counselor

I am a proud first-generation, Mexican-American Chicana, oldest daughter of a migrant family who came from Mexico to America in their youth. They worked in the fields all over California from Orange County to Santa Cruz County until they settled in Yolo County. Growing up, I lived in Colusa County in Northern California where one of the biggest sources of income is related to agriculture.
With that said, the only counselor I came to know was my high school counselor. She helped me get into my classes, gave me information about different colleges, planned trips to universities, and rallied for the students of color. She also knew about different resources as they were limited since I lived in a rural area.
Moreover, when I attended Sacramento State, I experienced culture shock because the University was bigger than my town, was significantly more diverse, and it was the first time moving away from home. It was overwhelming at times, but nonetheless, I learned to embrace it and was determined to graduate. I soon discovered that there are many different types of counselors that help different populations. I immediately sought after the California Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) academic counselors who significantly helped me get

In reality, it was a difficult journey as I gained employment and the transition was not easy as my grades reflect that in the fall of 2013. However, I quickly learned time management and how to prioritize which allowed me to become more involved on campus. It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

I am the first generation in my family to attend a University and never had an explanation about the application process. An educational opportunity I took advantage of was the Early Academic Outreach Program. This preparation program gave a presentation at my AP English class during my junior year and motivated me to assist their two day weekend bootcamp. The program was so valuable that it was worth it waking up early and for my parents driving me to UCLA for two days. It helped me to overcome my anxiety and my hesitation about the application process to Universities.…

As a Student Affairs professional, the special population I wish to serve is Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students. EOP students are students who have been identified as having the talent and ability to succeed in college, but have been placed at a disadvantage by financial and academic circumstances. Approximately 93 percent of EOP students have family incomes of less than $25,000 per year (Educational Opportunity Program, n.d.). Although colleges and universities are becoming increasingly diverse, there is a gap between ethnic minority students and majority students in the attainment of higher education degrees. My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…

Christian Counselors often use skills from the field of secular psychology and counseling, they recognize that the Bible, not psychology, is the final authority. "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness" (2 Peter 1:3). A Christian counselor's major strategy is to help their clients substitute biblical truth for error as they go about their day-to-day lives. Altho being a Christian Counselor has its drawbacks, it is the job for me because of the benefits it offers. Christian Counselors have excellent job prospects for clergy (6% increase in employment expected from 2014-2024).…

High School to College Transition The transition from high school to college has been an adjustment it is something new and exhilarating. College does have its academic challenges though that is much different from my high school experience; it is a challenge that has much more positive outcomes. This transition is one of the biggest step forwards, I have ever done, from being told what to do all the time to being independent and having a ton of responsibilities. I come from a small catholic high school in Lombard that has the population of around 700 students, so seeing the same people every day for four year gets old pretty fast.…
