Personal Narrative: A Career As A Heart Surgeon

Improved Essays
Have you ever felt like your possibilities are limited to what people have done in the past? My high school story reflects exactly that topic. “I have a dream”...I want to become a heart surgeon. I want to become the best heart surgeon possible. I realize that this path is not straight and I even try to make it challenging to reach my full potential. However, in 9th grade I acquired many hopes to taking a variety of classes to ensure a strong academic experience. My opinion of a strong experience was impossible , so as said.
At the beginning of freshman year my thoughts were revolving around any imaginable possibility of obtaining a full IB Diploma, a health profession academy’s CMA certification, a variety of AP courses, and manage to finish

However, if I skipped it sophomore year, then I would be taking Spanish 4 in Junior year when, supposedly I should take Spanish 5. Again, I had no idea how to solve this problem. Nevertheless, I was determined to find a solution. Therefore, I spoke to my own Spanish teacher, Mrs. Smith who said, “I know your potential and realize that you are 100 percent capable of doing this, however the head of the spanish department may not agree”. I realized she was right because no one had done this before from what they know of. Hence, a disapproval due to the challenge. Although, I was very determined and decided to go talk to her myself. That day, I walked up to the spanish office, determined to persuade her. I walked in and greeted the teacher and proposed my request. At first she declined my request and said, “This is not possible”. Then she decided that if I think I am capable enough to skip an entire year of spanish, then why don't I explain and give my request in spanish. At the moment my time stood still, thinking. I did not know exactly what to say, but I started talking. As I explained, the spanish department head became more attentive as she observed my spanish skills. To my delight, she agreed, along with telling me to keep up during my missed year. Finally, my problem had been solves and I did in fact continue to study because only hard work leads to

Before I went to the hospital my family and friends tried really hard to keep me calm before this big endeavor that would change my life forever. One of the things they did was talk to my pastor at my church about blessing me before the surgery. My priest blessed me by saying in a holy voice, “Please God protect Emily from all harm during this surgery, and please be with her during this hard experience.” Another wonderful gesture my family did for me was put on a birthday party, since my birthday was only a couple days after my surgery when I would be still recovering. After the celebration came to a close I went upstairs to go to bed, but before I fell asleep my mother came into the room with a gloomy look on her face.…

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

Yesterday, Oct 25, 2016, at 2:15p.m. , my soul mate, CMSGT (ret) Elmo Gladden, passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family. His death was due to complications from a second open heart surgery---while all surgeries are a risk, I would surmise to say that open heart surgery is especially risky. However, we did not know such serious complications would occur, thus leading us on a roller coaster ride of despair, hopefulness then doom for seven days.…

Healthcare has always fascinated me ever since I have volunteered at my local hospital in Rapid City. When I was volunteering in the summer of 2014 and recently on the 13th of January this year (2016), I had the opportunity to see the work environment of the medical imaging / radiology department. It was neat being with the doctors, nurses, and technologists watching them give x-rays, do an ultrasound, CT and MRI scans, nuclear medicine, and even a few procedures in Specials. In the radiology department, the workflow varied on different days. It varied depending on the number of patients they received.…

It was at this time that Spanish changed for me because I was going to learn how to read, write and speak this language more fluently. It’s the first day of school and I’m already in my second class of the day which was Spanish level 1 and 2 for beginners. The class room is over its capacity because there are roughly about 10 students without seats so they have to sit on the floor. The first week of school was pretty simple in this class mostly just introduction and having to write a few made up stories.…

A hospital consists of many important jobs and each employee work together to help patients get the proper care they need. One of the jobs in health care I am interested in is a Physician’s Assistant. They can examine, diagnose, and treat patients under the authority of a Physician. Responsibilities of a PA differ based on what specialty they choose and whichever state they get certified in. PAs can work in both private practices and hospitals, normally there is one doctor over several PAs.…
