Personal Narrative: A Career As A Firefighter

The essence of flowers gives way to the aroma of diesel gas mixed with the smell of slightly musty and smoky outer gear. Trucks of contrasting builds and sizes fill the large garage, easily towering above me. I am instantly curious as to what each vehicle does. Seeing my father, wearing a white uniform shirt as customary with his position as a chief, I excitedly bound over to him and inquire about the different kinds of trucks. I felt as if I was a child in a candy shop. My father tells me that the large truck with a ladder is called a ladder truck, which I should have already guessed. It carries an enormous ladder that extends from the truck but cannot come off. Fire engines, or tankers/pumpers carry tools, hoses, and water. I ask how much …show more content…
One quality firefighters must have is endurance. One must be physically fit to make it in the industry. Not only that, but once I get into the Air Force itself, to become a firefighter like I want to do, I must pass a series of physical tests that requires female participants to run a 2 mile in 22:43, 1.5 mile in 16:01, 21 pushups, and 38 sit-ups. (Put in text citation) I believe that doing swimming since I was in the seventh grade, has helped me build up my endurance for this. Ask me what the worst words that can come out of my coaches mouth are, and I’ll say they are “lactate set.” In a lactate set, swimmers sprint different distances which consist of 25’s, 50’s,100’s, and 200’s, all out and then when they reach the end, get right back out and do it again and again. I hated these sets, and I hated my coaches when it came time to do them. Though I finally realized that the reason they did it was not to torture us, even though it seemed like it, but to help build our …show more content…
When I choose to go active duty, I will start out by living on base, that way my living expenses, including utilities and maintenance, are covered. The Air Force also offers a generous retirement plan, as well as bringing a sense of pride to its Airmen. I will be eligible to retire with full benefits after only 20 years of service. Most Air Force bases have golf courses, arts and crafts facilities, bowling alleys, tennis courts, swimming pools and even equipment rentals, which can be either used for free or at better rates than similar facilities or options off base, which is just another added bonus. I will also be able to receive 30 days of vacation with pay, during which I am free to travel and take time to explore local and foreign destinations. If I wanted to travel to a different country all I would have to do is get on an Air Force plane and I would be able to travel there. The thought of bringing pride to my family is what makes me so sure this is the right path for me. In all honesty, I can’t wait to graduate and join the Air Force and take on a new adventure in my life. This is the chance I’ve been waiting for, and I’m going to make the most of

During my high school career, I have been volunteering my time at Cedar Mountain Fire Rescue as a junior firefighter. As a fourteen-year old junior, I could not take classes, participate in all of the firefighting activities, and had more restrictions than a regular firefighter. So for my first year of involvement with the department I was not very active, I only attended trainings on Thursdays and occasionally helped with extra fire department lead events. During those trainings though, I learned from observing what the more experienced firefighters were doing and what they were teaching. Slowly I absorbed some of the basics of firefighting and other duties that the department is responsible for, so when I turned sixteen and was able to participate…
