Personal Narrative: A Career As A Donor

I began cultivating my skills as a violinist at the ripe age of seven. As a naive child, praise and flattery caused an inflated ego, and compliments became detrimental to my growth as a musician. My biggest regret is failing to realize at a young age that great violinists are not defined by their achievements, but rather their sphere of influence created as a result of music.
My senior year of high school served as a rite of passage towards becoming a mature musician. I finally took the initiative to mentor underclassmen; spending time after school to nurture the young talents became a common occurrence. What started off as an innervating task quickly found its way into my hobbies. My decision to mentor students helped carve my legacy within

My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

When I entered the education landscape, I was foreign to the ideas and the nature of those that saw themselves as something more than just a student. I never thought that those students that sat behind the deteriorating desks could educate themselves. Ergo, as I transferred from middle school to high school, I began to discover those students that were seen as insignificant if I wanted to succeed within what was previously taught to me as the “real world”. Yet, it was through those encounters with those strange and unique individuals where I was exposed to something pure. I remember the first time I was ever exposed to music as an educational structure for me to discover myself in.…

Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. Whenever I participate in an ensemble, whether it be the SCHS Chamber Orchestra or YOPW’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, I enter into a haven in which the excess worries of everyday life wither away, and all that stands is the music before me. With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability…

In my two years studying at Jurong Junior College, I have decided to join the Guitar Ensemble to expand my knowledge of music; to add on to my prior experiences of learning the electronic organ during the younger years of my life. I have certainly picked up on the basic skills of playing the guitar and even received the chance of being the leader of one of the sections, however, more importantly, I have stepped down from this CCA bringing back extremely useful skills such as team work, diligence as well as perseverance, which will certainly help me to improve my attitude towards life. This is even more apparent as we participated in the Singapore Youth's Festival Arts Exhibition in 2015, as we stayed back for long hours in school to perfect the techniques and performance within each section, as well as among all the sections in the ensemble, whilst making sure to keep a balance with my studies as well. Though there were some conflicts within the team during this tense period, the problems are quickly ironed out as we worked together and managed to clinch a Certificate of Achievement.…

Lou Rawls, an American singer, once acknowledged music as the “greatest [form of] communication in the world” (“Brainy Quote,” n.d., para.14). Music is a way for people to express themselves and their feelings comfortably without being ashamed or embarrassed. While these are positive contributions to personal development, there is much more that music provides for people. The article, “Is Music is the Key to Success?” by Joanne Lipman, addresses how music can help people communicate, think, and feel better in a professional job that may have no correlation to music.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

By the time of my fourth birthday, I found myself utterly enraptured by my grandfather’s violin. Not merely for the finely tuned sound or the deep mahogany of the wood stain, but for the ability to create something that escaped the limitations of a singular definition - its existence too vast and superb to be constrained by the convent of mere words. My passion eventually lent itself to hours of diligent practice – days, weeks, months, and years passed by as my fingers molded themselves around the strings of my instrument. However, this meticulous persistence was not always fueled by delight. Some days my practice sessions were full of tears and arms that felt like they had cement blocks dragging them down.…
