We figured that my niece would have to see the error of her ways, get help, take classes, go to group therapy sessions, find a job and conquer her case plan. How long could that possibly take six months? The good news was that my sister who is the children’s Grandmother would be there to help us, getting the babies from daycare and coming home to help out while I juggled homework. We had it all planned out. My father, husband and I took turns taking my niece to her court dates and classes.…

It was a small court room, and the room was filled with all sorts of people. I think there were some that was there for court and some were there to hear someone’s sentencing. Last summer, I worked near the US District Court in Hartford and often stopped in to watch hearings and bench trials. As Political Science and Philosophy of Law student, I had read about the workings of the American justice system, but I had never actually seen it up close. In many ways, it was exactly as I expected: I knew who played which roles in the proceedings, I understood most of the legal terms, and I had usually read the facts of the case and procedural history on PACER before the hearing. One thing I did not know to expect, however, was the remarkable professionalism, curtesy, and preparedness the Assistant US Attorneys. I knew that AUSAs were talented lawyers and that their positions were highly competitive, but their quick and…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family. In my transition from childhood to adulthood one event stands out. This event was my experience with the American legal system as a witness to a friend that was being unjustly persecuted. I learned through this process that the legal system has multiple steps which all take a painstakingly long amount of time to occur, and in every step the pressure, nerves, and anxiety built.…

ding. If I were in this situation as the parole officer I would do my best to try and help to mother, in whichever way possible. I know this would go against my beliefs and rules that I must follow as a parole officer but I still think I would try my hardest to help this mother get back on her feet and be able to provide for her children. I think many people would jump the gun and file a violation report on this specific issue, as she is violating her probation, but I don’t feel that would be the best way to approach this situation.…
