I have been involved in every community service project my chapter has organized, as well as been an officer. During my junior year of high school I served as the VP of Community Service. My responsibilities included coordinating community service projects and maintaining relationships with local businesses and organizations. This year, I hold the office of Vice President and my job is to keep chapter members involved, carry out and plan community service, hold meetings, etcetera. Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

The dusty debris clouded my feet as I moved through the ruins of the neighborhood. The pungent smell of the blood overwhelmed my nostrils, and my eyes watered partly from the effect of the dust and primarily from the overwhelming sadness and fury that warred inside of me. The once polished commercial buildings were wrecked; broken windows, crumbled pieces of the wall, and gang graffiti served as evidence of the disaster that struck this neighborhood. Silence ran throughout the area, and no human presence could be detected. The evening sunlight projected a red tint over the wreckage, like spatters of blood, and indicated the upcoming arrival of the rebels; who carried out their attacks predominately during the night.…
