I was told, “You can do and be anything that you set your mind to.” Up until about my sixth birthday, I thought this meant that I would have a chance to be everything that I wanted to be which was a cloth designing ballerina that was also a cosmetologist. My dreams have constricted down to a more practical focus. For my research, I went to my favorite salon, Bianucci’s Salon and Spa and talked to and observed my stylist April Bianucci.

When I open the door completely I always stand there for just a brief moment and take a deep breath, inhaling the wonderful aroma and think to myself, “This is

April told me about her struggles of when she first started doing hair, she told me the best way to get where she is would be to start at a small salon with a lot of walk- in appointments such as Great Clips and then from their build up clientele and if they like your work they will follow you to any salon that you go to. My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

There is nothing like going into a salon, and coming out feeling like a completely different person. Personally, it was something I found therapeutic. As the storms of misfortune found there way to me, and blew me off course, I could always anchor myself and take control by changing something about myself. Whether that be a new hair color, cut, or a beautiful set of acrylic nails. I want to be the person someone comes to, and trusts to make them feel good about themselves.…

If someone has not already thought of this, they most likely will because the majority of people have to have serious questions based upon what they want to make a career out of. In third grade, I decided I wanted to be an interior designer and it was not until last year, my junior year in high school, that I figured out it would not be the best job field for me.…

As my senior year recently came closer to an end, it became more clear that I was more unsure than ever as to what I wanted to do in life. School was not something I enjoyed and the thought of furthering my education taking random classes without knowing what I wanted to do seemed depressing. I decided I would enroll in the community college near my home in Alabama and get started on some basic classes. About a month after graduating, I was talking to my mom and she asked me what I wanted to do for a career. Still depressed and feeling anxious about the subject, I told her I really just wanted to go to cosmetology school.…
