It takes a passion for learning, determination, and the ability to make the most of what you have. I have known Gabby Barry for a little over a year now as her College Counselor at GSSM, a small public two-year residential school for students from across the state of South Carolina. I find her to possess all of the above qualities and more.

This past summer Gabby had the opportunity to conduct research at the Medical University of South Carolina under the mentorship of Dr. Andy Wessels. In the Science Symposium held in high school, I presented my research on “Chemistry of Pain medicines” to the Advanced Placement Chemistry and Biology students and teachers. Going into the research paper I thought I knew what specific nursing job I wanted, but discovered it might not be the best fit for me. After having spoken to another student who was also majoring in pre nursing, she gave me ideas to do extensive researching not only looking at the school requirements, but also key skills, work environment, and that is workload required. The articles I mostly used were from google scholar, SFSU Leonard library, study.com, The Journal of the American Medical Association, and National Student Nurses Association. These sources are credible because they have different studies to back up the results of their research. The National Student Nurses Association can be considered a blog as it does have some personal accounts in the article, but sticks mostly to the logistical and fact based results of the nursing program.…

When she was in the 9th grade she was involved in a history class project where she would go to the hillside slums on Saturdays to play games and do activities with the children there. This project was meant to give the children from the slums positive role models and activities to keep them out of trouble. Throughout the rest of her high school and college career, she has decided that she wanted to help the children in her community by tutoring in East Harlem and assisting teachers. Working with the autistic kids through a professor at NYU, she had found a hidden passion for writing and analyzing research, as well as, problem solving. I started doing research on what programs JMU had to offer in their Health Science department, and it is here I came across the Bachelor’s Degree in Health Services Administration. The program seemed interesting to me, a mixture of the health care field with some business aspect to it, so I contacted the program director and set up a time to meet. After talking with Dr. Jon Thompson, I realized that this program might actually be a better fit for me than what I had originally set out to accomplish in my undergrad. I started taking classes for the program in the fall of 2012, and as you can see from my transcript, I excelled at doing well in these courses. One of the first courses I took in the program, US Healthcare System, really opened my eyes on what healthcare is like in this country.…

Berta is someone I look up to as a person, and she also has my utmost respect for being the most laid back professor that I have had so far here at Pellissippi State. She has made me feel like I actually matter in this world, and that I actually have a purpose. I know for a fact if I ever needed anything from her she would be there to support me and push me all of the way.…
