“London Bridge is falling down/falling down, falling down/London Bridge is falling down/ My fair lady.” When I was 15 years old, I started my first job as a counselor for the Green Island Park Program, where I sang nursery rhymes, played games, and oversaw arts and crafts with children in the program. Even though I faced challenges, such as getting all the children to participate in the daily activities or dealing with children that misbehaved, I never had a dull moment during my five years as a camp counselor. The summer before my senior year of college, I decided to devote more time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and what career path I should follow. So, I decided not to return to work as a camp counselor. This became the worst decision I have ever made while simultaneously being the best decision. …show more content…
Since the age of 18, I have always worked two jobs, roughly 60 hours, during the summer, so that I could contribute to my family’s household because both of my parents are permanently disabled. While I enjoyed the people that I worked with, I did not enjoy the work itself. Although I served different customers each day, I performed the same tedious and boring tasks. Even though the work was necessary, it was not meaningful to me. When I went to work, I could not wait for the clock to strike 10 pm so that I could finally escape. I tolerated working at this job because my co-workers were friendly and the pay was decent, but I realized that I gave up part of my happiness when I chose to work at the supermarket instead of at the park program. I missed playing basketball games with the children, playing limbo in the sprinklers, and making art projects with the children. Most of all, I missed seeing the excitement on their

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Every summer I work at Featherbed Lane Day Camp. There I have the opportunity to be a caregiver to the campers from ages 7 months to 13. One time I was paired with the kindergarten girl’s group. It was an amazing time with them because I love young kids, especially the girls since I’m one. One problem I had was giving an equal amount of love and attention to each girl.…

At times I think it’s often quite normal for new teachers to become overwhelmed their first year teaching. Especially at a school where there may not be enough resources to adequately assist them, this leaves many new teachers to fend for themselves. In my experience, it was my mentors that made a difference in my career, and prompted me to pay it forward and it is these mentors that I try to emulate in my own mentoring. A mentor serves as a professional role model for the mentee.…

The trip to a camping site in the middle of a Pennsylvania forest- a trip I would never forget- lead me to the discovery of myself and my transition into adulthood. This trip was through the summer camp I have attended for now eleven years; Liberty Lake Day Camp located in Columbus, New Jersey, is my second home. I grew up in this camp, and when I finally reached the age to become a L.I.T, a leader in training, I was eager to undergo the program with my friends I always attended camp with. This trip was a reward to all the hard work we do as L.I.Ts. Little did I know the annual L.I.T trip to the camping site would be life changing.…

My dilemma was which camp I should attend this summer. The choices were Boy Scout camp with my scout troop, or the CIT program at Camp Ockanickon. This was an excruciating decision, because I had a tremendous desire to attend both of these summer camps. But the weeks that they are in the summer overlap. This was an immense problem for the reason that they both offer things that are needed to help me later in life.…

I am willing to bet that there are many astonishing young men and women who have applied for this scholarship. I am also willing to bet there are a fair amount of applicants who meet the unwritten standards needed to receive this scholarship. I will not boast promises of outstanding grades or how this money could build my future. Instead, I will tell of my past, allowing my personality speak for itself. Growing up my parents always encouraged my siblings and me to stay true to ourselves, whether that is morally, mentally, and/or physically.…

I heard about Bethel Christian Camp through a friend that went to summer camp in June. I also went on a retreat with my youth group and we stayed at this camp. I started researching more and saw these positions available. I would love to work along with others as we pour our lives into these kids and share the love of Christ. I have never worked at a camp, but I have done mission trips with my youth group and I also do the photography for the trips and other…

When I first started my career at The Department of Corrections (CDCR) in Chino, California, I had no idea that my decision to become a Correctional Officer would be one of the worst career choices of my life. One day, in particular, made this abundantly clear. One single day would challenge my ethical viewpoint, and without a doubt instill that no profession is worth my soul and making the appropriate ethical decision can be a traumatic experience. It all started when I arrived to work on that summer night in June of 2011, being assigned as a swing shift sick relief officer would place me anywhere in the prison.…

Deciding to quit was the best decision I had made because I could actually go out with my friends and still have a little bit of fun. Most importantly, I quit my job because I was not getting paid enough. For example, I work 40 hours a week cleaning tables at the restaurant and only got paid $150.…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. At first I thought that it was like any normal 3- day camping trip, which made me extremely excited since I enjoy camping very much. Once I got there, I realized that it was a different type of camp. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing. The reason I’m writing this is because I learned so much about being open minded, accepting, and kind to other people and new experiences.…
