Personal Narrative: A Career As A Baseball Player

Improved Essays
I found myself in a predicament during my junior year baseball season. I was the starting shortstop. One early May day our coach decided to bench his best player and start his backup. Consequently, we lost the game I waited to have a one-on-one talk with my coach. I questioned why he benched me. He told me that “I had not shown him that I deserved to be the starter.” “That if I actually worked hard I would have made him unable to take me off the field.” I ended up calling my dad for advice. He explained that because I didn’t work hard and didn’t show my coach how much I wanted and deserved to be the starter, I had lost my opportunity, and that if I ever got another opportunity I needed to be ready because you never know how many opportunities

For as long as I can remember, I have always played as the left fielder in baseball. Playing this position was always easy for me. When I estimated the trajectory of a ball speeding through the air, I could always run to where I thought it would be and catch it. It was as if the outfield became my home, I was comfortable there. One day during practice, my coach told me to try and play as the first baseman.…

It was springtime during the year of 2012, I was just about to start my summer. I was looking on the internet for sports to do in Kaneland, because I wanted to compete at a higher level. But I was not always comfortable with playing on a travel baseball team, but I knew this could be a great opportunity for me, so I took a risk and after all it, payed off. I asked “Dad would you think I would be able to compete and play on the travel baseball team” He smiled “Yes, but one thing I learned when I was young and playing baseball is; it is a game of mistakes, and the only way you can succeed is if you practice over and over to improve.”…

Baseball: the sport where you stand around for 20 minutes and move 3 feet to the left and move 3 feet to the right. It’s so intense. It’s so intense that you could take a nap on the field with everything out there. Of course, I’m being sarcastic. The only time it’s actually fun is when you’re annihilating the other team while they’re asleep on the field.…

In the tryout, I did not perform as well as I knew I could have. That was due to the lack of effort that I had in the off-season, because I just thought that position was mine for the taking. When the coach talked to the players individually about our roles on the team,…

I would mimic my idols every chance I had or I would dream of myself being in a critical situation to win the game and to make history. Now, I am chasing my dream by trying to become one of those greats who played the game.…

Even since I was little, baseball has and will always be my passion. I have played baseball every summer, but if I had to choose a favorite it would of been the summer of 2010, when I was twelve. The reason why it's my favorite is because I got to experience an event of a lifetime, playing baseball in Cooperstown, New York. There is a tournament there every summer that consists of more than one-hundred teams and the only way to describe it is amazing. If there was one thing I was used to by now, it was that whenever something didn’t go well for me on the baseball field, the future holds green pastures only if I go looking for it. So sure enough, after that loss, I set my eyes ahead to the next season. That final season we had a great start, winning a lot of games, but we ended up barely making the playoff as somewhat of an underdog. We didn’t think about anything that was at stake, we simply played our game all the way to the championship game without a loss in the playoffs. We won the first game of he series and were winning for the majority of the second game.…
