Personal Narrative: A Break In The Air Force

Improved Essays
I have been broke and broken before. Regrettably, it has happened twice in my life. The first time was for love. The second time was for financial arrogance. I am a bit of a romantic, so let’s focus on the first time I was broke and broken.
During my first tour in the Air Force, I was stationed at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. I was single for over a year and ripe for falling in love with the first woman I met, her name was Akemi. We dated for three wonderful years. At the end of my four-year tour, it was time for me to make a decision. Do I stay in the Air Force or do I follow through with my pre-military goal of one term in the Air Force? The later would include, moving back to Indiana and finishing college.

In an attempt to make it work, making a volatile situation toxic, we got engaged. The plan was for me to move to Japan and try to get a job on base as a civilian. I could also continue going to school through the University of Maryland. After I finished the semester at USI, I moved to Japan where we devoured my savings. No job. No money. Not only did she meet someone else, but she was also pregnant with his baby. Broke and broken, I returned home.
Three things helped me overcome my setbacks: Arizona, Glendale Community College (GCC), and my wife. I am not a religious person, but the way this happened was more than luck and happenstance. The Air Force changed a policy allowing former military members to reenlist. I moved to Luke Air Force Base (AFB) and fell in love with Arizona. From growing up in a military family, I have become very resilient and I adapt really well to change. With my surroundings changing all the time, I have to be able to quickly adapt to my new setting and find ways to fit in as quickly as possible. I have been to about twelve different schools so far, and I have lived in about eight different houses. When I live on a military base, change is constant, even if it is not my own family experiencing the orders to move that year. The houses around me fill and empty all the time with new people, and some of the military dominant schools I have been to have the same problem.…

Having the honor to serve in the Army is one of the most rewarding vocations I can think of. Not only will I be protecting the people of this nation, but also I will be defending it’s virtues, and upholding the tenets that make America truly great, namely freedom. I have always considered myself a true Patriot, and attending West Point and serving my country will prove the extent of my patriotism. My entire life, as short as that may seem to some, I have striven to better myself, improve my core values and sharpen my mental strength. As a younger adult achieving the rank of Eagle in scouting helped me focus on these efforts.…

The next step after the military would’ve been with police; I wanted to become an investigator with the Albuquerque Police Department. So I started to research all I could about the field and many things I could do within the department or around the field. Soon as I kept studying, reading many websites within the ABQ police department, I did realize that most of the jobs within the force’s requirements included, being a US Citizen, some more disappointment had bought but I knew that some stuff like wouldn’t slow me down to the many opportunities I did have open. While researching more, I did find out that I did qualify for something, and that I would get a part time job with them just to get my foot inside while I wait until hopefully the day would come. My next attempt would’ve been within the APD Police Service Aide.…

Obtaining my undergraduate degree was one of the highlights of my life. By day I attended classes, studied hard and completed my student observation and student teaching requirements. On nights and weekends I worked at a country club working as many shifts as I could to pay for my courses at St. John Fisher College. When I graduated in the spring of 2005 with my Bachelor of Arts in History and my initial teaching certification in hand, I was excited to teach and challenge the young minds of our great state. As I sent application after application to every school district in the tri-city area, I quickly realized that teachers in Western New York State are a dime-a-dozen.…
