Personal Narrative-9/11: A Short Story

The raindrops trickle down from the peak of my forehead, dance across my eyebrows, and finally take the leap down the 400 foot drop. Adrenaline surges through my veins. Soaked jungle trees completely surround me and pouring rain beats away at every inch of my body, like I am enclosed in the belly of a tsunami. The light Honduran air entraps me while the wind whispers and sings to me in a cold whistled tone. The zip line stretches across the gaping 400 foot drop and I cannot seem to locate the end of the line. I manage to latch my clip onto the zip line with my trembling fingers. My muddy, drenched clothes drape off me and feel as if they weigh a thousand pounds. The only place I can seem to find security is in my harness that is fastened a little too tightly around my thighs. …show more content…
Whistling down the zip line, tree leaves hit my outstretched arms and simultaneously form a collection of green leaves in my clenched palms. My body takes the sense of flying as freedom now surges through my veins. All of my distilled fear has escaped through every pore and replaced with a sense of success and joy. As I travel down the bend of the line, I see the ending. In a total state of flight, I march through the air to my destination. My feet hit the wooden platform on the tree and I come to a halt. My fingers clench to the chocolate brown bark of the jungle tree. I peer my head up to look through a hole in the leaves of the trees to see where I started. As I glance back at the lone platform and gaping drop, I see nothing but success. I conquered the zip line in spite of all the fear I originally contained. Looking back at that moment, I knew what personal success felt like when it was

night being 16 years ago on this day, I’m sure America woke up still in shock or not even able to sleep through the the United States was on high alert after the towers have been hit by two planes flown by two suicide bombers on 9/11/01. I woke up on the morning of September 11, 2001 and at the time I was 10 years old, I remember looking at the television that was on news and seeing the twin towers on fire and smoking. I didn’t understand back then what was going on, none of the adults in the house we’re talking about it or what had happened I just thought it was another day. As I went to school and ate breakfast, I remember hearing our teacher talk about it and the worried look on their faces. Before we were to go back to our classes, I asked…

This past summer, I had the opportunity to go zip lining for the very first time. I, as with anyone with a slight concern for dangerous heights, wasn’t too keen on dangling hundreds of feet off the ground, and was extremely anxious. Just before I was about to step off the edge, I remember my friends encouraging me, “Don’t worry, Marina! It’s as easy as riding a bike.” In some cases, riding a bicycle isn’t as easy as you would expect.…

I felt winded, my body clashed against the the hard gravelly ground. Adrenalin corsed throughout my veins as jems leash was looped against my ankle I screamed as i tried to set myself free as the rope zipped as jem ran… “Do you want to play on the swings”? I asked as I walked around jem beca my friend's dog and we smelled the cool crisp wind flowing around me. “I don't care”, she said as she unhooked Jems long leash from a old oak tree,a bubbly feeling from the pit of my stomach as we started to run down the hill with jem close behind and her gold fur waving in the wind.…

The thought of accidentally dropping my poles enters my mind as I observe lost items in the snow below. As we ascend, more of the slope enters my field of vision. At first, the skiers and snowboarders in my view move at a leisurely pace as they reach the bottom; but as altitude increases, so does the skill and speed of the people coming down. The added elevation diminishes the number of trees providing protection from the bitter wind that starts hitting us like pins and needles. I pull my bandanna up and fit my goggles to the shape of my helmet, in an attempt to block out the frigid breeze.…

Parachute’s Descent A rapid snap of wrists attached to chubby, stout arms thrashed downward and rippled the colorful, circular sheet in front of us. The sheet wrestled with the hot, stagnant air and produced bursts of wind that bounced off the walls of my elementary school gym. Looking around, twenty-six six year old faces blurred together. The grinning faces morphed together to form a fleshy, monochrome background contrasting to what I was concentrated on.…

It was a sunny, June afternoon. The breeze was coming downward, and the sun was beating down on the back of our necks; however, today wasn't the same as usual. “Come on crew, we’re half-way up Phillips”, yelled the crew leader ahead of the tired and gasping group. I had been scaling this mountain for the last 45 minutes, and was still noticing the same shrubs, loose gravel, and awkwardly bending trees I’d seen when I started the ascent.…

The first trip of ski bus two years ago, should’ve been the end of my life, along with all my other friends who shared the experience with me. It was the first trip of the year, and everyone was so excited. All the way there, people were talking about how they couldn’t wait to “get on the slopes again.” It was pretty exciting, if I do say so myself. Once I arrived, I hopped off the bus, and ran towards the lodge to go get my gear that was already prepared for me.…
