I was extremely nervous and my hands were sweating so much that a pond was made in my gloves. I gripped the steering wheel as tight as I could, emptied my head of everything except the race, and pressed on the gas pedal with so much force that I thought i could the feel the asphalt of the track rubbing the bottom of my shoe. I maneuvered around the turns at extremely high speeds as a blew by every car I came close to, shooting by like a rocket. After I blew by seven cars in forty-eight laps, I shot up to third place. I was standing by the race track, the cars flew by at incredible speed. The announcer said the blue bullet in lane 4 won the race. The crowd was applauding and cheering. That was the end of that pinewood derby, now we wait for all the results and then the trophies. My Dad, my brother and I have been involved in a group at our church called Christian Service Brigade or CSB for short.…

Slipping my boots on, my focus was fully on the task of getting my mare bathed and ready for the barrel race we were heading to that evening. My thoughts racing in my head as I reached for her halter and lead from the hanger on the tack room wall. I've been to barrel races so may times in the past twenty years that I should be at ease, but I'm almost more anxious now than I've ever been before. Walking toward the gate, lost in my thoughts, I'm wondering what the night ahead has in store for my partner and I. When I say "partner" I mean my horse.…

My dad had been racing street stocks at Tri County Motor Speedway and Hickory Motor Speedway since before i was born on December 9th, 1998 he raced full time for several years afterwards until my sisters were born when he began racing on only a part time basis. Until he finally retired and only made a start here and there in 2014 i began racing in the Renegade division at Hickory Motor Speedway finishing tied for 5th in points in my rookie year out of 18 drivers throughout the year. In 2015 i had a lot of bad luck from axel breaking in the first race, wreck totaling the car next race and a lot of mechanical problems throughout season but still was able to battle back to a 6th place points finish out of 14 drivers. In 2016 it started out the…

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. This Bible verse has had significant meaning to me particularly while running track in high school. Track is a sport that requires hard work, determination, speed, focus, and self-discipline.…

Let’s drive fast, make a left turn and repeat this process. Now, continue to do this for hours sounds exciting, right? Many people would be hesitant to consider driving a car around a dirt track for several hours on a hot Saturday afternoon as an actual sport. But then some find it interesting and this is where the story begins.…

When I heard that we were going to a monster truck derby, I didn’t know what to think. We got tickets from entering this raffle, and the tickets had the name of a famous monster truck derby on it. A monster truck derby would be cool, but I didn’t want to sit in one spot for three hours. And the drive would be long as well. The traffic was going to be horrible since it was a big monster truck derby and we already lived two hours away.…

I once thought I couldn’t believe in myself! I felt as if I were nothing but a sheet of glass that was completely useless. When there were gloomy days, I felt like broken glass that was scattered all over the ground and I wouldn’t be fixable. So I thought if I joined a sport, I would then, have no choice but to believe that I can do more and accomplish more, and be better than whom I was! When I was little I loved to run…

When I ride it's like the earth stops at every corner so I can check to make sure a, loud, car isn't roaring towards me. It's like that feeling in your chest that tells you that everything is going to be ok, yet your mind is screaming at you that it won't be. I ride because I was thought that you need to be active in life, but it was never about the one hour of activity time we are supposed to have growing up. it was much more than that. I didn't need help to ride, I needed help to face down my enemies, or conquer my dreams.…

During track season, my seventh grade basketball coach thought that it would be a great idea if I joined the track team and competed in the 400 meter event. I attended every practice and I was motivated and convinced that I could win first place. However, on the first track meet that I attended, I was in last place. I was so far behind that the girl in first place passed me up.…

I’m starting over again anew something different now. The last run was great while it lasted. Day one back at practice was pretty rough, hitting balls endlessly at the range brought upon old bad habits. It made me realize how far away I was from my former swing, the consistency, strength, and concentration it had brought me. I had now found myself with a rugged backswing and an upbeat tempo.…

About a year ago at this time, I was training for the NYC half marathon. I’d never really taken to running in my life, despite always being pretty active. This was different. I should be used to the fact that my luck with cars has been passed down to me from my dad. We have had horrible luck with vehicles! I am kind of wondering when this run of bad vehicles will end for me? My recent vehicle has been in and out of the shop since I bought it a year and a half ago, so have not owned it for too long and it already gives me a headache when I think about it. I got the car all on my own…

In my life time I always been successful and unsuccessful but, one event that I consider to be very unsuccessful was when I didn’t push myself as much as I should have in Cross Country varsity race. I consider this to be one of my biggest failures because I didn’t force myself to keep up with the guy in front of me nor, did I force myself to keep up even with my teammates. I suffered in that race and questioned myself “Why am I doing this? Why do I even run?” I was morally and mentally crushed during this race and it just made me feel even worse when I found out during the race that I was in last place in the entire time I was racing.…
