Personal Music History
When thinking about my earliest musical memory, two specific memories continue to play through my head. I can remind when I was very young, around two or three, when my mom would sing “you are my sunshine”. She sang this to me almost every morning and night and because of this has become a song that reminds me of her and being young and carefree. I can also remember being about 5 years old at the family cottage watching Disney Sing Alongs on VHS. I begged and begged my mom to sing and dance in front of the television every day. When I was a child my mother and brother were around me most and I believed I learned from them the most as well. My mother had her own dance studio and my brother and I both danced. This meant

For instance, being musical could mean that you play an instrument, it could mean that you know how to count music, and it could also mean that you have a great taste in music or enjoy listening to music. I don't believe there is one set answer to being musical to me. I think that my past experience with music shows through in how I personally define musical. This is because I listen to music, I used to play a couple different instruments, and I can count music. I also describe myself as being musical based on my personal definition. Although I do not participate in music lessons or choir like I previously did, I still continue dancing and listening to many genres of music to keep me interested. If I were to rate myself on a scale from one to ten, I would place my musical skills and abilities at a seven. This is because I find myself getting involved in listening to music and going to concerts. The music that I like now is very similar to what I liked when I was younger. I mainly listen to the top one hundred, some rap and some R&B. I feel although as I grow older I appreciate music as an art form more and realize the work that is put into it. The experiences that I have shared will form how I teach music and what I teach. I believe that my art teaching will be constructed mainly around listening to music and interpreting it, but not using instruments to play it. I think that the basic knowledge of playing music that would be enough to cover basic principals in the classroom and that my previous experience will also enhance my teaching

Though certain genres of music don’t necessarily appeal to me, i.e. rap, the general existence of music makes me happy. Writing music isn’t my strong suit, nor is playing musical instruments; I am self-taught in piano. I had been in school choirs from sixth to twelfth grade.…

    1) Growing up, I listened to all sorts of music with my parents. Both had really different tastes of music and it allowed me to get a great appreciation for different things. The song My Wish by Uncle Cracker meant a lot and means even more to me now that I am older, because my mother would always say, “Now girls, I really hope you will remember this when you get older and never give up on anything in life.” As kids, my sister and I would say, “Yes momma”, and the day would continue on.
