It is within my personal control to make sure I stay awake and alert enough to focus on the work I have to do and not get distracted by my phone or bed. For example, I can possibly turn my phone off or start drinking coffee or energy drinks; however, this takes away from my social and family life. My beliefs about Rotter’s locuses of control did influence my actions towards my challenge. I have been trapped in the external locus of control and failed to realize that it is the opposite. I have been using my rugby commitment as a scapegoat for my challenge and blaming my inability to use my time wisely solely on the sport. By overcoming my challenge, I can do all of these things effectively. I can become more intellectually competent through homework. Class instructors assign homework for a reason; so that students can better understand the material and practice answering questions about it. Because of this, when homework is rushed or not given any effort, it is unproductive and a waste of time. If I can develop a system of completing my homework efficiently, I will not only be able to complete it, but I will be able to learn and benefit from it. Furthermore, finishing my homework will allow me to improve physically, as I can use the rest of my free time for additional exercise, or for resting and getting more sleep instead of playing on my phone. Additional exercise would help me develop my physical strength and endurance and become more competent physically, while getting more rest and sleep will help my muscles and body perform better and avoid injury. All of these things would help my military competence, as it helps develop discipline. Having the discipline to get my work done, even through fatigue and lack of motivation, can translate directly to combat situations and other military tasks that have to be done in the Army.
