Ever since I was a small child, I have always stood out to others as a strong leader. Early in my life, I was part of a peer model program that was designed to utilize socially advanced students in a classroom focused on peer mentoring. For two school years, at the ages of 4 and 5, I was one of only two students placed into early development classes to be an example for students who had varying special needs. Some of the most memorable were volunteering at the local 6th grade day camp for the last four years. Essentially, I was given a group of up to twelve 6th graders, who I would help guide through team bonding activities. It was rewarding to be a part of their social growth as they begin their journey to middle school, while experiencing the outdoors with some students for the very first time. As memorable as that time was for me, I am excited to next share my single greatest leadership achievement, the Ignition Program at Waukesha West High School. Having earned a position as a member of the board my sophomore and junior years, I decided it was a program that meant a lot to me and was elected Co-president this year. Between my co-president and I, we guide 90 mentors as we welcome the incoming freshmen to the ‘high school life’. We plan and coordinate an entire day prior to school start to introduce freshmen to the high school itself and to each other. We set them up for success beginning the first day and continue the momentum with 2 weeks of before school mentoring to field questions and concerns that surface day to day. We also focus on the importance of getting involved, and highlight different groups and gatherings throughout the school to help our new students find their niche. Looking past just paint brushes and pencils, my most creative capabilities come from the mentality that “the world is my canvas.” It was my high school art teacher that had encouraged me to expand my thinking, and look for the more creative sides to different situations. Of course there's a simple way of doing things, but once you put your imagination to work, you see there are many creative directions and paths you can take, and none will lead you the wrong way. Here is one example from my favorite art teacher, who I was fortunate enough to complete an independent study with. We were creating triptychs (a three panel art piece), our only requirement was that it needed to include a bird. By assigning just one requirement leaves numerous options for the execution. My project became an elaborate opening bird house with a garden scene of sunflowers inside, while my best friend highlighted a scene from “ The Black
