Personal Insight Questions My dad crossed the border when I was only six months. He never finished middle school and my mom went only up to freshman year of high school. They had to drop out because they had to help and support their family. After I was born my parents realized that in Mexico there’s nothing for us. They knew that there isn’t big opportunities for us to prosper in life. My dad decided to cross the border and by his third try he actually made it. He was in the United States working to get money so he can bring my mom and his three kids including me. Six months later my uncles helped my dad by crossing my siblings and I over. We used their kids green card because we were all about the same age. My mom tried as much as possible …show more content…
As my little brother and I grew up things got very intense at home. My older brother and sister got in so many physical fights and my dad would get in them so he would stop them. I always made sure my little brother wasn’t around this environment because I didn’t want this to have a negative effect on him. If he was around I would put him in a room and cover his ears so he wouldn’t hear anything. Eventually the cops and social workers got involved and my older brother ended up in foster care. The social workers believed my little brother and my life were in danger. Couple days later my sister ended up in a mental hospital because she was cutting herself. My mom ended up being depressed and my dad wouldn’t be home until late at night. My little brother was only in kindergarten and my parents weren’t paying much attention to us. It angered me that they did this but since that happened I would go home straight from school and made sure my little brother ate and did his homework. I made sure he was on top of his school work and that he never had bad grades. Now he asks about colleges and which would suit him best to pursue his dream. It’s amazing to hear him say “When I grow up I want to be just like you.” I am glad that through everything it didn’t have a negative effect on …show more content…
Junior year was is when I started taking interest in science because I started volunteering in the hospitals. Anatomy taught me how our body functions and how all these little things make us up. I find it amazing how if one little thing stops functioning right then it can cause other things to stop functioning also. What caught my attention in the hospitals was seeing all these premature babies on machines that were keeping them alive. I couldn’t believe at a young stage life all these babies were already suffering. I had the chance to feed one of those babies through a feeding tube with the help of a neonatal nurse. This is when I realized that I wanted to dedicate my time to help these babies survive so they can continue on growing. I always wanted to be a nurse but I never knew what kind or why until I started volunteering in the community hospital nearby. I enjoy spending time with little kids because they are strong, so innocent and I like helping them so I find it a great opportunity to work as a neonatal nurse because they are surrounded by all these babies fighting to stay

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…
