Personal Insight Questions My dad crossed the border when I was only six months. He never finished middle school and my mom went only up to freshman year of high school. They had to drop out because they had to help and support their family. After I was born my parents realized that in Mexico there’s nothing for us. They knew that there isn’t big opportunities for us to prosper in life. My dad decided to cross the border and by his third try he actually made it. He was in the United States working to get money so he can bring my mom and his three kids including me. Six months later my uncles helped my dad by crossing my siblings and I over. We used their kids green card because we were all about the same age. My mom tried as much as possible …show more content…
As my little brother and I grew up things got very intense at home. My older brother and sister got in so many physical fights and my dad would get in them so he would stop them. I always made sure my little brother wasn’t around this environment because I didn’t want this to have a negative effect on him. If he was around I would put him in a room and cover his ears so he wouldn’t hear anything. Eventually the cops and social workers got involved and my older brother ended up in foster care. The social workers believed my little brother and my life were in danger. Couple days later my sister ended up in a mental hospital because she was cutting herself. My mom ended up being depressed and my dad wouldn’t be home until late at night. My little brother was only in kindergarten and my parents weren’t paying much attention to us. It angered me that they did this but since that happened I would go home straight from school and made sure my little brother ate and did his homework. I made sure he was on top of his school work and that he never had bad grades. Now he asks about colleges and which would suit him best to pursue his dream. It’s amazing to hear him say “When I grow up I want to be just like you.” I am glad that through everything it didn’t have a negative effect on …show more content…
Junior year was is when I started taking interest in science because I started volunteering in the hospitals. Anatomy taught me how our body functions and how all these little things make us up. I find it amazing how if one little thing stops functioning right then it can cause other things to stop functioning also. What caught my attention in the hospitals was seeing all these premature babies on machines that were keeping them alive. I couldn’t believe at a young stage life all these babies were already suffering. I had the chance to feed one of those babies through a feeding tube with the help of a neonatal nurse. This is when I realized that I wanted to dedicate my time to help these babies survive so they can continue on growing. I always wanted to be a nurse but I never knew what kind or why until I started volunteering in the community hospital nearby. I enjoy spending time with little kids because they are strong, so innocent and I like helping them so I find it a great opportunity to work as a neonatal nurse because they are surrounded by all these babies fighting to stay

I remember my sister Mary telling me, “I want you to take these classes so it can prepare you in the future, you have the opportunity to take these and learn what I should have learned, but we all learn from our mistakes, I just want you to make good life decisions and be proud of you.” (Salazar, Mary. Personal interview.August 2012). At first I did not know what my sister was talking about. When I was a freshman at Blackfoot High School, my sister was pregnant at age sixteen. Being a teen mom at her age is one of the most exhausting stages in a person's life. I did not judge my sister decision, she did the right thing keeping her baby and achieving her goals by graduating high school and receiving her certification in Dental Assisting. My…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru. Also working as a medical assistant in a dermatology office, everyday I interacted and assisted with a variety of patients, who were often nervous and self-conscious about stripping down for a skin check or getting a mole removed. I found demonstrating empathy for the patient’s feelings helped most in these situations. One patient in particular was so nervous she was close to having a panic attack. Instead of getting frustrated at her lack of cooperation, I tried to understand her emotions and actions. I made eye contact, listened to her concerns and was compassionate.…

The first thing I noticed was the color. It was faded in one section. The different layers were now becoming visible. The pattern of the couch reminded me of it. I sat in the spot. I sunk to the middle. It was perfectly curved inward. I saw that the soft fabric isn't the same as it used to be. I thought about getting it fixed, but it is much easier to just ignore. The look of the couch made me want to take a minute to reconsider my decision. I unzipped the cover and took it apart piece by piece.…

I was 23 before I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. As far back as Elementary school I knew that there was something “off” in the way that I processed information. That my ability to do well academically was somehow hindered by not having certain tools that I needed, tools I wasn’t even aware existed. In high school, I began to augment my deficits with strengths. Where my grades were lacking I made up for it through creativity; I excelled at art and photography.…

In third grade, a boy named Blake - a notorious troublemaker - would chase every girl during class trying to kiss her on the lips. Most of the girls gave in eventually. It was easier to give in than to keep running. When it was my day to be chased, I turned to him, grabbed his glasses off his pudgy face, and stomped on them in front of all the kids on the blacktop. He ran to the principal's office and cried. At that time, it was okay for a girl to do that and normal for boys to cry.…

Everyone has a haunting moment in their life, one that’s so traumatizing and horrible that it perpetually replays in their minds. For me, that moment occurred in the early days of summer 2015. I was stuck home babysitting my two little siblings for the day while the rest of my family was in Baton Rouge at some birthday party I didn't go to because I really didn’t like the entire parents hosting it. You know the type. The ones that don’t know what a blinker is. The ones that decide that the self-checkout line was made for more than 50 items. You get the point. So anyway, for lunch, my mom leaves us with Chick Fil A and some Panda Express meal so I’m like, “Eww, I’m not about to eat some cold, soggy Chick Fil A meal. I’ll just give it to my…
