Identity is a socially constructed concept. We learn about our own respective identity and the identity of others through interactions with family, peers, organisations, institutions, the media and through other connections we make in everyday life. Identity is the beliefs, qualities, personality, appearance and culture that make a person who they are. Identity relates to self image, self esteem and individuality. Personal identity evolves over the course of our lives and may involve aspects of our lives that we have no control over such as where you grew up, the colour of your skin, as well as the choices you make like where you choose to spend your time and your beliefs. I am very content with my physical appearance, I am of average stature and build for a woman of my age and have hazel brown eyes and dark brown, straight hair. I love my hair and think my natural colour suits me best, although I think it can become somewhat boring and monotonous at times and for this reason I enjoy changing my hair Colour to vivacious colours to greater express my exuberant personality. My Mam took immense consideration in choosing my name. She scoured through name books investigating the origins and meanings of each name before she finally decided that Sophie, the name of Greek origin, meaning wisdom was the most fitting. I have always liked my name and thought it to be very beautiful. Names can give us a huge insight into our family history, my surname Byrne is a variant of the Irish O’Broin meaning raven. The O’Broin family primarily came from Kildare and were said to be descendants of Bran, the king of Leinster who died in 1052.
