Throughout my academic career I struggled to find a sense of my own identity. In high school, and early in my college career, I wasn 't sure what I really wanted to pursue in life. I 'd always felt a pressure to succeed from my family, my community, and my peers. I 've never had a strong ethnic or cultural identity, my ancestors come from all over, but I 'm given the sole label “Caucasian”. When I was younger, I felt that it was a disadvantage not having a strong cultural or ethnic identity. I come from a small family, and didn 't have a very big sense of community or identity. What did I want to do for the rest of my life? It seemed such a daunting question. After completing high school, I took some time off from academia to figure out what I wanted to do. I bounced between odd jobs, working at fast food restaurants and doing manual labor. I quickly faced the reality that I needed a more meaningful career. When I decided to return to school, I enrolled locally at Bellevue College, and I signed up for classes. At the time, I saw my father 's success in his gainful employment as a Database Administrator, and thought that I wanted to pursue the same thing. I took classes in Physics, Calculus, and English. Contrary to my initial desire to work with computers, I soon found solace in the study of English. If I am accepted into the University of Washington it would give me the ability to continue to pursue my study of English locally. Furthermore, studying English at the University of Washington would give me the chance to learn under a rigorous program, and allow me to continue to hone my skills. The University of Washington will help to set me up for a career in which I can use writing, reading, and analytical skills. Whenever I tell people about my passion for English, they immediately assume that I want to become some sort of famous author one day. While I am passionate about writing, literature, and poetry, I am also passionate about more technical applications of the English language. For instance, I took a class about Technical Writing which really opened my eyes to the reality of gainful employment with a degree in English. Having spoken to my professors about their previous occupations, I began to get a sense of what I wanted to do. One such teacher told me how his previous job was writing manuals for a guitar company. I hope that through the University of Washington I can become proficient at the technical aspects of English as it relates to communication and business, and ultimately find a job where I can use logic, rhetoric and grammar for to create things that other people can use or benefit
