Personal Identity: A Short Story

Improved Essays
"You only act indifferently to look cool." My friend once told me. Although he talked in a playful manner, his answer came to me as if a punch to my face. If anyone asked about my personality, I would highlight my indifference. I considered it one of my strengths, and until then, I thought it as my inborn personality. But the answer sparked a doubt about myself because it was true that when I was young, I tried to act such way in order to seem more mature. As I dug deeper into my mind, I couldn't grasp my own identity. Was I truly indifferent? Had I become indifferent starting from that habit? Or was I still acting? What seemed like a joking comment from my friend raised many questions about my personality and entrenched a question that was

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

When I think about the boy who I was growing up, the young adult I am today, and the man I plan to be in the forthcoming years, one aspect of my life stands out to me far more radiantly than anything else: my culture, my skin, my identity as a Bangladeshi-American. There aren't many clubs or organization for Bangladeshi Americans such as myself. Make no mistake, there are certainly events for Bangladeshis living in the United states, many that I have attended due to various entreaties from my parents. These are event where the only language spoken is one that I barely speak (Bengali), the only music conversed about is that which I don't listen to or understand, and the only events discussed happen in another country that I have spent only a…

Since I am not confident on what the two-ness of my identity is, I asked some of my friends different questions about what they think of me, and compared their thoughts to what I think of myself. I asked two of my close friends two questions. What they thought of me when they first met me or before they knew me well, and what they think of me now. I asked two of my other friends, who I’m not as close with, what they think of me now, and what they thought about me when we first met.…

An author, Margott, once wrote a quote, “Don’t let someone change who you are, to become what they need.” The characters in all of the stories have struggled with their inner identities or capsized, when someone else influences them or makes them change themselves ,they do something that they understand now and have their realization in the end, when that person was not worth it or helping them in anyway. So they all reflect back to that quote and relate to those exact words. In the short stories “Fish Cheeks,” by Amy Tan, “Two Kinds,” by Amy Tan, “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant,” by W.D. Wetherell, the characters learn about their identities through significant moments. To begin, in the story “Fish Cheeks”, Amy Tan realizes about…

Occasionally, when I’m with my friends, I am not seen as a person with thoughts and feelings as complex as their own, but a novelty. Like other people, I speak and laugh and make jokes. Often the words I say and the actions I take are done in the name of humor or wit, but sometimes, I inquire. I ask questions like “how can we see the color yellow?” and “why is it a firefighter’s responsibility to save a cat from a tree when the tree is not on fire?”…

The older I became, the more I wanted to express a character’s emotions, beliefs, and purpose, but not just as reproductions. Through entertainment,…

People have always been interested in the idea of finding out about personal identity, what makes you the same person as you were when you were five and what will make you the same person when you are eighty. Derek Parfit summed up this idea by saying “Whatever happens between now and any future time, either I shall still exist, or I shall not. Any future experience will either be my experience, or it will not.” (Parfit- 186), which is what personal identity looks into. This essay will discuss whether personal identity is a matter of physical or psychological continuity, taking into account the famous ideas of philosophers such as John Locke, Derek Parfit and Bernard Williams.…

Personal Identity; a concept of oneself most individuals are expected to possess. Ever since the personality quizzes and future career planning units that took place throughout courses in elementary and middle school, I have found the importance of self-concept in adult life to be abundantly clear. In addition to determining a pathway to future success, personal identity allows for interpersonal connections and relationships. Quite honestly, even without all the external pressures, a sense of myself cultivates feelings of personal security, calmness, and acceptance.…

“Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, Life is but a dream.” That is the first song I was introduced to as a child growing up and I never really put much thought into what that song really meant. Was it just catchy to me and I enjoyed singing along to it?…

At this moment, I was directing my attention to what my friend just said to me and if any of this defines me at all. I could barely respond to my friend so all I did was turn my head forward and attempt to concentrate on class since it had already started. The room seemed silent at this point and my friend was listening to the information the teacher was telling us. I was also trying to take in the information as well, but the issue is, I could only think about the fact that I was thought of as someone who is very reclusive as well as a one-sided person who just takes part of a single hobby throughout life.…

Personal identity is the individual traits or characteristics that define the uniqueness of each person (Traiger, 12). Everyone has a self identity or personal identity. Our personal identity includes those roles, attributes, behaviors, and associations that we consider most important about ourselves (Ylvisaker). In other words, the personal identity can be race (e.g., white or black), occupations (e.g., teacher, doctor or police), gender (e.g., male or female), ability status (e.g., temporarily abled or disabled), attributes/characteristics (e.g., talkative, lazy or dishonest) or spirituality/religion (e.g., Jew, Catholic or Buddist) etc.…

Mistaken Identity Parents carefully think about the names that they would give to their child upon giving birth. It is so significant because that person will carry his or her name throughout their lifetime. Names are given to characterize a person from another; it is also a way for that particular person to see himself or herself as an individual. I always love the first name my parents gave me.…
