The canadian government gives us the right to survival, and with all rights comes responsibilities. One responsibility that comes along with the right for survival is not just the concern for one’s survival, but the survival of many, for example elders, related or not. People of old age may not have always have the basic ability to take care of themselves and perform basic tasks like bathe, feed or dress themselves which makes them vulnerable. The mental and physical state also have a great factor in elder abuse. As one grows older their physical capabilities can become severely limited by the weakening of their muscles, the strength of their bones, and sometimes a disease like arthritis. Their mental state can also be affected by dementia and depression, which are prevalent in elders. Many people take advantage of this vulnerability resulting in many forms of abuse. Elder Abuse is the crime of harming or stealing from an old person, committed by somebody who is trusted to care for or help them. These physical and mental restrictions allow for an able bodied person to take advantage of an elder. The Pope is correct because humans pass on traditions, morals and ethics onto the next generation and if one generation does not care for the elderly this will be passed on and the elderly will be forgotten about and neglected and possibly cease to exist. To stop this from happening the abusers need to be found and persecuted for their actions. If there was a twelve year old being abused, it would be the first thing on the news and the number one story, opposed to if an elder was being abused, very much like the issue now, they are being ignored and left to continue being abused and neglected. To stop these situations where abuse is ignored, society as a whole needs to come together and agree to respect peoples right to live and be treated with dignity, and acknowledge that there are issues of abuse around them that need to be addressed, and not be left alone to further progress because they do not want to get involved. “defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and
