I refrain from making hasty decisions, a trait that’s made it easier to manage time and keep my life organized. It’s not that I don’t enjoy some spontaneity, just that I’ve had experience with faulty planning. I like to consider as many details and possible outcomes of a situation before making a decision; in fact, I believe it’s my best characteristic. Thinking things through allows me to make sound, satisfying choices in both my academic and social life. It is a practice that has saved me from careless mistakes on math tests and kept my activities.…

Decision Making in Nursing Nurses make decisions that have life and death implications (Payne, 2015). Nurses must be accountable for their decisions as well as the consequences of those actions (College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, 2012). Clinical decision making is a complex process that requires the nurse to draw from personal knowledge, client history, previous clinical experience, as well as intuition (Banning, 2008; Benner, 1984; Blum, 2010; Payne, 2015; Tanner, 2006). These decisions impact how efficiently, competently, and satisfactorily the client is treated (Etheridge, 2007). Decision making models have been developed to assist nurses with their critical thinking to ensure safe client care and improve client outcomes (Lauri & Salantera, 1995; Tanner, 2006).…

Effective clinical reasoning skills are essential in nursing; an estimated half of all clinical adverse events are attributed to errors in clinical decision-making (Levett-Jones et al., 2013). Tanner (2006) defined clinical reasoning as the process via which nurses arrive at clinical decisions by weighing evidence, pattern recognition, using intuition, selecting from alternatives and patient safety. This clinical reasoning cycle (CRC) consists of 8 cyclical steps namely, consideration of the patient’s situation; collecting of cues and information; processing of information; identification of problems and issues; establishing objectives; taking action; evaluation of outcomes; and reflecting on processes and new learning (Levett-Jones, et al.,…

A group of biologists have developed a general model to explain growth and development in ectothermic organisms. Changes in environmental temperatures effect the rates of most biological reactions and biological processes in ectotherms. The rates of ontogenetic growth and development are no exceptions. Ectothermic animals develop faster at warmer temperatures and they usually mature at smaller body sizes. This phenomenon has been called the temperature size rule (Zuo et Al. 2011).…

On the midterm test, covering chapters 1 - 6, I earned a score of 88/100, which is a B. Part of the reason I received this grade is how I prepared for this test. My main concern was learning the vocabulary I expected to see on the test. I focused on this because I knew it made up a majority of the test, 80% to be exact. To study for the vocab, I created an online study guide with the terms and definitions on the website, quizlet. I studied this set for a couple days till I became very confident in my abilities to recognize and define the 40+ terms.…

Performing my PPE helped me develop a better understanding of how a medical record is processed from the inception until it is filed in permanent records. I had no previous experience in a hospital setting so I was not sure of exactly how the entire operation is carried out. I have learned much in the classroom setting but after a while, it becomes difficult to truly understand how it all unfolds without seeing it in real time. When I am there, seeing things happen in real-time, it helps me to understand much better than I would if I had never been there. I have always been a visual person, so this helped me in so many ways.…

A strength that I hope to utilize in my practice is my ability to actively listen to patients. As a provider, I want my patients stories to be heard and I have no problem allowing them to speak their minds without any interjections. I feel that this skill will prove useful in my practice because it will allow me to gain a well-rounded perspective of my patients’ lives and disease processes. In the book, Anna Dodge’s last provider used his ability to listen as his greatest resource; while other providers were not able to listen to her, he was and this made all of the difference in care. I am hopeful that my listening skills will allow me to gain a better understanding of my patients, and in turn diagnose them correctly.…
