Finances are an important part of life. You have to make money to be able to buy the things you need and want, but you also need to be able to manage your finances well to be able to do that. Have you ever asked yourself questions like how will I do my taxes? How much does groceries for the week cost? If something broke, what do I do if I do not have enough money to fix it? These are just a few of the things we don’t really think about but it’s important to know for future reference. So yes, in my opinion I think that students should be required to take a personal finance class to graduate high school. Learning how to balance your money, can help to do that and also, to prevent more people from being in debt in the future. The more you know, the more you can take those skills and apply them to your own personal finances down the road.
Every high school’s main goal is to prepare their students for college and how to find the right career. However, high schools tend to overlook that their students will go to college academically prepared but not socially, financially and emotionally prepared to handle the real life challenges outside of high school. Nobody that has just become an independent adult can fully understand or know how to manage their finances without have been taught in the past. As far as I can tell, many schools do offer personal finance classes to their students. The only issue there is, is that it is not a required course for those graduating. Some may argue that students need to focus on the basic academics. But, what about the basics of life? Like paying bills and maybe even opening up a bank account. Recent graduates are said to of struggled with things like this. Nobody wants to step into the real world “blind folded”; with not being taught this knowledge, that’s basically what is happening.
