My experience with the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County is one that I will remember forever. I begin my field experience in January not knowing what to expect nor what would be expected of me. I knew that this experience would help me to evolve professionally, however, I did not know that it would help me to evolve in a social setting. During my time with the Domestic Abuse Council (DAC), I received the opportunity to meet great employees, numerous courageous survivors, and very bright children. It was not an expectation of mine that the survivors would enter into the shelter and leave the shelter so frequently. Whenever I came into the shelter, there was always either a new survivor going through the intake process or a survivor being discharged.
Some of my duties as an intern were to answer crisis hotlines, connect callers with resources, create a comforting and welcoming environment for the survivors, complete office duties, laundry, sustain a clean shelter, restock toiletries for the survivors, provide clerical assistance, and interact with the children within the shelter. Most of my responsibilities consisted of residential duties. One of the most memorable moments that I had from interning with DAC is when I had the opportunity to assist a survivor with her resume. It was fulfilling to know

As with most domestic abuse agencies, women are expected to be served the most at SALP. One of the most daunting fears of a woman who has or wants to escape an abusive relationship is the thought of not being able to support her or her child on her own, so programs will be available at SALP to focus on their strengths and build connections in the job market. This would hopefully make clients comfortable and confident enough to actively participate in society as productive citizens. Due to the fact that SALP’s clients would primarily be…

I am currently employed at the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, CCADV, as the Director of Membership Organization Services. CCADV oversees the eighteen domestic violence programs in the State of Connecticut and works to change social conditions through policy, advocacy, public awareness and community education (Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2015). CCADV advocates at a national and state level to develop and implement policies that will improve Connecticut’s response to domestic violence. Some of the key changes that CCADV has facilitated in recent years to domestic violence laws and policies in our state include, securing funds for 24-hour staffing at all of Connecticut domestic violence shelters, strengthening civil restraining orders and criminal protective orders to ensure gun forfeiture by offenders, as well as extending the length of civil restraining orders, enhancing the definitions of strangulation, threatening and stalking to achieve greater protection for victims, implementing a statewide Model Law Enforcement Policy on Family Violence as the standard by which all law enforcement in our state respond to domestic violence, and increasing housing protections for victims by allowing early lease termination when they’re in danger (Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2015). CCADV does not provide direct services to clients traditionally but often we work with clients who need greater resources than our programs can provide for them.…

My professional goal is to obtain a Walden’s Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in crisis and trauma intervention. I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the…

The Domestic Violence Survivors Act would allow for judges to consider abuse when giving sentences to those convicted especially when the crimes were directly related to abuse. The act would consider the sentences of those arrested and convicted who defended themselves against their abusers, and those who were arrested because of crimes that connected to the abuse. The Act would also give survivors who have been sentenced to harsh sentences a chance to shorten the sentence, or be granted an early release. After years of speaking openly about survivors of abuse who were formerly and presently incarcerated, the bill has been recognized as an important issue and was approved. Prior to this Act, judges could not consider the abusive experiences…

To be a part of their change, of their healing and the emergence of beauty for so many is overwhelming. To be counted with so many organizations on the front lines of restoration, while still in my healing process, is constantly a remarkable miracle to me. Domestic Violence cripples the spirit, the soul and the mind. Yet often outsiders say in disgust, “why don’t you just leave, why don’t you just pick up, pack up and leave?” For many, doing so can often lead to a death sentence.…
