Health and Disability
A child’s general health can affect their development. Children who have spent an extended amount of time unwell or in hospital in the first years of their life may have delayed physical development. Premature babies are more likely to show variations in their development than full term babies. Their milestones are assessed from their due date, rather than the date they were born. A pre-existing health condition can affect a child’s development in a range of areas. It may make everyday activities harder for them to be involved in and even prevent them from taking part. A family with a low income will buy cheaper food and usually means lower quality. A poor diet can affect growth development and a child’s behaviour. Inadequate housing can affect a child’s health. They may struggle to access places to be physically active as there may be no garden or safe playing area nearby. Damp living conditions cause poor general health and a family may not be able to afford heating during winter months. They may not have a proper bed or have to share with siblings which can affect their health if they are not getting enough sleep. Children with a disadvantaged background may also experience higher levels of crime as a way for their families to survive which can become the norm and potentially stay with them into adulthood.
