It was the summer of 2010 when I had made a decision that impacted my life considerably, and that decision was to learn how to play the cello. It all started when I had to choose a fine art to pursue in the 6th grade as a part of the mandatory curriculum. As I had prior experience with the piano, I thought that it was logical to choose an instrument as the learning process would be expedited since I already knew how to read sheet music. I settled on the cello as I enjoyed the beautiful, rich sound that it produced and at the time I desired to be unique and thought that no one played the cello as the stereotypes made it out to seem like all Asians played the violin. The cello has given me the chance to experience happiness that other activities that would have never given me. One joy that the cello has given me is the joy of knowing that you actually accomplished something because of the hard work that you put in. The events known as Solo and Ensemble and Region Orchestra are prime examples of what has allowed me to enjoy this feeling of happiness. Solo and Ensemble is an event where a musician chooses a piece of music and works on it for a few months, performing it in front of a judge around the start of February with a chance to go to the state level. This year, I chose a particularly difficult piece, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor. This piece was easily the hardest music I have ever played before, and I had thought of dropping out because I felt that I wasn’t prepared enough. However, I persevered and practiced hard.
