Personal Experiences And Reading Success

Improved Essays
How do experiences in reading effect our reading success? Often, good experiences turn into success, and bad experiences result in less success. I don't read very much, and that effects the way I read and how I feel about it. In “Sharon Cho” and “Kevin Clarke” from Speaking of Reading, Cho and Clarke discuss their personal experiences with reading and how it has effected their reading success. By comparing my own examples and Cho and Clarke’s examples, it can be inferred that experiences I'm reading greatly impact our reading success. If you have positive experiences in reading, you are more likely to be a more fluent and more active reader. On the contrary, if you have negative experiences in reading, you are more likely to read less and have

Overall my experience with reading has been forced, and limited and has lost its original glamour. For me what reading novels brings to other people, I can obtain through other means that are more appealing for my way of thinking. While I don’t enjoy the act of reading a 600 page mandatory novel, I do enjoy the conversations that it can cause. Such as the debating, and sometimes the arguments, that come from the material within the carefully thought out cover pages can be intriguing and rewarding. However, to say that books have influenced my thoughts about the world, or have made…

Reading is widely considered a gateway to knowledge, fantasy, and emotion. It is omnipresent in society through media, both digital and print; it is a core element in a college student’s academic workload, and provides a medium to stray from an otherwise finite world. Having been surrounded by these texts for my entire life, it begs the question, why I am utterly incapable of efficient textual evaluation? Beginning sophomore year of High School, the frequency at which I read steeply declined. Since, unless the content grabs every ounce of my attention, I cannot seem to read nearly as quickly or stay focused; stray thoughts, noises, or movements easily pull me out of whatever passage I am reading.…

Copious amounts of successful people share a fondness for reading in both their past and present. Elon Musk is an engineer, inventor, investor, a Canadian American business magnate, and a devoted reader. “When he was asked how he learned to build rockets he stated,’ I read books,”(Merle, 1). Many affluent people, such as Elon Musk, point to reading as the reason for their accomplishments. Clearly, reading isn’t rocket science, but it sure can help with it!…

By adding up the amount of pages that I read and dividing it by eighteen my answer is 75 pages per week. I saw an improvement in my reading because the number of pages I read in a week had increased. I am quite satisfied and this motivates me to read more. I want to tighten up my gear and raise it to at least 100 pages per week in order to achieve my wish. Usually I would have read books that are around 100 to 200 pages, but this time it is longer than usual.…

This one of the most unique academic articles that I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and the author makes many valid points supported with research when he can. The author begins the text by telling readers how when the right child has the right book amazing things can happen. When students are given a book the truly connect with they are able to learn powerful life lessons, learn how to handle difficult situations, and most importantly, children discover that they are readers and how enjoyable and beneficial reading can be. When students enter middle school however, it seems it does not matter how many positive experiences with reading the student has had in the past chances are reading is going to come to screeching halt. The author…

Reading and writing have impacted my life in numerous ways; in fact, reading books has impacted my life by expanding my vocabulary. My mother would read difficult books to expose me to broad new words to me at a young age. She would also have me study dictionaries, and continuously give me spelling test. When I got a little older I would start to read books on my own. I would read books that opened up my imagination; such as the series, The Magic Tree House.…

When I reflect on my literacy experience, I inevitably think of two things: my old high school library and Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. Philosophy of Reading I am someone who loves children, and knowing that I am one step closer to having my own classroom gives me a huge sense of hope and joy. If I can help just one child, I feel an irresistible sense of accomplishment; and as a teacher I will have the opportunity to help many children. To succeed as a teacher, I need each one of my students to succeed. I believe reading is the backbone of the classroom; and ultimately being a proficient reader increases the chance for success in life in general.…

I graduated from kindergarten as a non-reader. I was the eldest child in my family with two younger siblings. My mother was always occupied both with work and with three children under five, so she didn’t realize that there was anything amiss until the summer after my kindergarten year. She recounts how she was shocked and concerned when she found out that all of her friend’s children were already reading. She would tell you that I had not a sight word in my wheelhouse.…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
