During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

The U.S. Army had been under a magnifying glass since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a result, the Secretary of the Army and the Army Chief of Staff gave directives that the Commanding General of the Training and Doctrine Command lead a review of the Army as a profession from changes that had taken place since the beginning of the wars. The Army as a Profession of Arms is still not defined concretely. My perception of the Army as a Profession of Arms is that we are citizens, volunteers, trained to eliminate the enemy, and entrusted with a moral ethic and duty to serve and protect the rest of the populous of our great nation. We, as volunteers in our profession, have answered a calling that we are committed to something greater and…

“One is left with the horrible feeling now that war settles nothing; that to win a war is as disastrous as to lose one” (Agatha Christie). To begin, this quote exemplifies how soldiers are left with the feeling that war solves nothing since the events haunt them through their disabilities. Soldiers are left with a permanent impression on their lives through the injuries they experience from war, like the loss of a limb or nightmares of such tragic events that would scare even the most intrepid(1) soldier. By the same token, this quote illustrates soldiers who are faced with the distress and longing desires to flee from the trauma which they have encountered during their service. The death of those they have fought with, cried with, and faced…

The United Sates Army formed in 1775 when the need for a militia arose during the Revolutionary War. The necessity for such service is the result of the population’s need for defense and protection. Like many occupations, the Army serves the civilian population’s needs through protection and defense. What makes the Army a true profession though, is a unique set of standards and ethical values that embody each person that accepts the calling to serve for the country. These standards come from five essential characteristics of a profession: expertise, trust, development, values and service.…
