Personal Experience: To Read Or Not To Read

Improved Essays
To read or not to read, that is the question. I found myself asking this question before reader’s workshop. The answer was mostly no for me. However, now, after reader’s workshop my answer to reading in my free time is more frequently, yes. I have never felt reading was a chore I must get done, but with more homework and sports I thought I didn’t have time for reading, but I found out I was exceptionally incorrect. I fell back into my habit of reading during and after reader’s workshop. Having the experience of reader’s workshop refilled my mind with the pleasure and comfort of reading. From the stress of worrying about stuttering, not making enough eye contact, or not making any sense, I would have thought I would have liked to make a presentation

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

As children, we are taught that the ability to read is important and are even required to have a period of silent sustained reading. There is an implication that reading is always literary, however, there isn’t one specific subject that is tied to reading. I’ve read history books, books about animals, encyclopedias, anything to just read. Not only did it deepen my passion for books, it helped me develop my writing skills. I gained knowledge from the books that I read which evolved into writing my own stories.…

I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. The only thing fixated on my mind was reading a new book and being totally captivated by the plot. Since then, I read less and less, sometimes going months without finishing a book. I feel sad that I spend less and less days staying up to midnight just to read one ... more … page.…

Even if it's short stories, or just articles on the internet, it is something good for the brain, and would help tremendously, and help you grow as a reader. I sit down and start to think about what it would be like if we did not have the ability to read. It also makes me think about how important reading is to us. Chapter 4, Reading: How Muscle Reading Works pp.136-141 While the concepts and ideas that are presented in this article may be helpful to some, to me, it is rather late to completely adjust my techniques in reading. The process of muscle reading can generate decent results, but following every step will only become a burden. Instead, I prefer to do steps out of order, and void specific steps out if necessary.…

As far back as I can remember, reading has always been a tremendous part of my life. Growing up, my mother introduced reading as one of the most important skills I could learn. Throughout my childhood, my entire family constantly incorporated reading into my daily schedule by helping me complete word searches, reading books, or rehearsing the ABC’s. Every night before bed, my mother and I would read a page out of a children’s bible book called Blessings Every Day as opposed to the classic Green Eggs and Ham. Reading has taught me how to exercise my imagination, how to effectively communicate with others, and relieves my stress.…

Ironically, though I wasn’t immediately taken with reading, I became an avid reader after those first few difficult years. I was a regular at my elementary school’s small library, and I competed in everything book-related that I could. Battle of the books, spelling bees, and English classes were my favorite pastimes in grade school. Other children dreaded completing summer reading and literature studies, but I looked at reading…

In the quote by Christopher Columbus he states “By prevailing over all obstacles and distractions, one may unfailingly arrive at his chosen goal or destination” I thought this quote pertained to me because I know this year there are going to be many obstacles in English class, but if I just push myself I know I can reach my goal. As a reader and writer, I believe that I have grown stronger over the years. In the past, I did not like reading at all I would try to get by with reading as little of the stories as possible in order to pass. I felt this way until this summer when I started to read the books for English.…

In the essay, “ The Lonely Good Company of Books,” by Richard Rodriguez,he mentioned to his readers in the very beginning that he was not big reader as a child. Having a hobby of perusing is likely a standout amongst the most gainful, worthwhile, and rewarding hobbies that someone can ever have. It is through perusing that people can develop new thoughts and create new ideas. Seeking through books can take individuals to new places and peep into people’s lives. I describe perusing as a trip that begins with the opening of the first page, and completes as the last page is turned. Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
