Personal Experience: Shadowing Hospital Placement

Decent Essays
I have always appreciated what I learn from classes as a Exercise Health Science major at UMass Boston. I believe that the Czech Hospital Placement is a great program to justify all my learnings so far and give me the chance to implement what I learn in school to a live clinical setting. I chose this program because of the many experiential learning opportunities offered. The major attraction for me was the opportunity to shadow a doctor on a daily basis. Unlike other shadowing programs, CHP assign mentors who are healthcare professionals specialized in the field I am interested in. I will have the chance to bond with the doctor from that department and learn from him or her one on one everyday. This ratio means an optimal learning experience.

The relationship between the staff at Missing Hospital and philanthropists in other countries is very secretive and deceitful; as the Missing Hospital fails to use the funding they received appropriately. For example, after Matron receives a call from Eli Harris of the Baptist congregation in Houston, a philanthropist, Matron tells him they have lost a staff member and will be a few days before she can talk with him and hangs up. Soon later, it is said that the financial support given by Eli Harris’s church to fund a program to check on the citywide campaign against gonorrhea and syphilis was never created at the Missing Hospital. Later Matron worries about the support needed to continue its ministry, as she believes that the hospital’s benefactors are likely to believe the hospital is unproductive and failing to own up to their promises.…

An emphasis on serving underserved groups, such as minorities, and addressing current health disparities were my primary motivations for applying to Morehouse School of Medicine. Following residency, I hope to practice medicine in a community limited in terms of affordability, accessibility, and availability of healthcare options. In such a community, I can utilize my medical education for the purpose of addressing the health concerns and disparities affecting those in society who are often ignored and suffer in health as a result.…

Through the Health Practicum course offered at Anderson, I have been able to gain invaluable exposure to the medical field and a variety of occupations. Ever since my Honors Anatomy and Physiology course I took sophomore year, my interest in the medical field has grown and developed. Following this course I took Honors Pathophysiology and decided that the next logical course in my health-related progression would be Health Practicum. From early in my childhood, every toy and electronic device in our house was a target for creative ‘re-construction’, holding each piece up with a probing ‘why’. As I grew older, ‘why’ became a need to fix, build and reconceptualize and so the path toward medicine was a natural progression. Years later, my facscination in podiatry emerged through formal and informal study; recognizing a medical universality about the specific region of the foot and ankle. In incorporating a range of specialties to include Dermatology, Orthopedics, and Pain Management, few areas of medicine seemed so encompassing. A personal turning point was the realization that mobility is what defined the very notion of functional independence.…
