Personal Experience: Pursuing A Career In Virginia Beach

In the Philippines, I grew up around nature. My parents took care of gardens. My mother would plant vegetables as a hobby. I was raised to value nature, but I never saw myself taking a career in saving the environment or doing anything green related. That is until I attended the National Green School’s Alliance Conference.
During my junior year, my favorite teacher and AP environmental science teacher, Mrs. Wood, invited me to go the conference for free. I’ve never been to a conference before so I came in with an open mind, ready to expect anything. As I went from around and heard the speakers, the presenters, and those manning their booths I noticed that there was one thing in common. No matter how old or how young, how successful or how humble, I saw passion burning in their eyes. From marches to protests to dealing with both the government and private industry every story they told was filled with hope and enthusiasm. They were all so eager to share their discoveries and success not matter how big or small. After all that, a spark had lit up

Having clean and clear water in the streams and canals, especially the Chesapeake Bay, would be more aesthetically pleasing and increase tourism, the main industry of Virginia Beach and some cities around it, along with the watershed. As my education progressed I continued to learn that the cloudy waters can be attributed to high nitrate and phosphate levels. Many of these pollutants come from the runoff of fertilizers used in neighborhoods and farms. So now there was a question that needed an answer, “How to eliminate nitrate and phosphate levels from runoff?” I mean it would be more efficient to remove pollution before it reached the water rather. I kept this in mind as one of the many environmental problems that I will seek a solution for in career as an

The greatest human impact on the water quality of Barnegat Bay is irrigation. Irrigation occurs when water is added to land or crops in order to aid in growth. In the northern parts of the bay, where “peak nitrogen levels have been recorded”, many homeowners continually use lawn fertilizers which carry nutrients in the runoff produced (Seitzinger 6). In addition to being a problem in the northern Barnegat Bay area, in the past few years, “the pollution problem is now being magnified by increased development in southern Ocean County, creating the same ecological hazard in the lower part of the bay” (Moore 1). This contributes to nutrient loading, which is when an ecosystem has a high amount of nutrients entering it in a short amount of time.…

This week, the reading selections were quite interesting. We have these two authors, Taylor and Epstein, who truly approach the environmental topic in separate ways. On one hand, we have Paul Taylor defending our environment all the way in the article “The Ethics of Respect for Nature”. In this article, Taylor insists that we switch our current perspectives, regarding the environment, to ones that further zoom in on the sake of nature. In fact, Taylor states that “once we reject the claim that humans are superior either in merit or in worth to other living things, we are ready to adopt the attitude of respect” (330).…

A personal goal of mine is to help the villages of my parents who were born in Peru. Educating the village members and using the learned material I have received…

The Chesapeake Bay’s water quality has been deteriorating over the recent years. Some reasons for the decrease in quality are agriculture, chemical contaminates, and sediment. Agriculture has caused problems for the Bay due to the use of fertilizer. When it rains, the excess nutrients run off into the waterways that lead to the Bay. These excess nutrients include nitrogen and phosphorus.…

According to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation “polluted runoff is a major source of pollution in Howard County. About one-quarter of the nitrogen pollution in county rivers comes from polluted runoff, and much of its sediment pollution” (14). Pollution runoff can be anything from hazardous chemicals to trash or dog waste. When a storm flood occurs, water runs through watersheds and picks up any types of pollution and contaminants. This is why “Storm-water runoff is one of the most significant threats to ecosystems”(14).…

I know there are plastics in the ocean, but I was naive to think that this was a problem that could be easily solved with a large net and some boats. Your story really grabbed my attention and kept me interested thought out the speech.…

On Friday and Monday morning I attended the CCDM Conference in Milton where I learned about many different disasters from floods to wildfires, gave a presentation on blizzards and am getting ready to participate in the debate with disaster experts from all around the world. From this seminar, I have brought back a lot of knowledge and experience to help prepare us for the future of Canada’s natural disasters and what we can do. During this conference I have attended many seminars and the three which stood out to me were floods, fires and volcanoes about how they form, their effects, where they occur in Canada and what the government is and should be doing. My first meeting of the day was floods where I learned a great deal of information…

PCB’s and wastewater are continuously released into the river at this location, and the data found was analyzed from several aspects. It is important to know, given the parameters of the New River, the distance down river from the arsenal in which the water could be considered safe. Also, it would be beneficial to know whether the given concentrations of contaminants have enough of an impact on fish to the point where they could be considered unsafe to eat.…
