During my junior year, my favorite teacher and AP environmental science teacher, Mrs. Wood, invited me to go the conference for free. I’ve never been to a conference before so I came in with an open mind, ready to expect anything. As I went from around and heard the speakers, the presenters, and those manning their booths I noticed that there was one thing in common. No matter how old or how young, how successful or how humble, I saw passion burning in their eyes. From marches to protests to dealing with both the government and private industry every story they told was filled with hope and enthusiasm. Having clean and clear water in the streams and canals, especially the Chesapeake Bay, would be more aesthetically pleasing and increase tourism, the main industry of Virginia Beach and some cities around it, along with the watershed. As my education progressed I continued to learn that the cloudy waters can be attributed to high nitrate and phosphate levels. Many of these pollutants come from the runoff of fertilizers used in neighborhoods and farms. So now there was a question that needed an answer, “How to eliminate nitrate and phosphate levels from runoff?” I mean it would be more efficient to remove pollution before it reached the water rather.
