Comfort Keepers: A Short Story

I waited with my cellphone in hand as one, two, three rings, and finally…“Hey Lily!” a familiar voice greeted, his tone friendly and confident as always. In the background, one could hear the quiet rumble of his car as he made his way from work, back home to his family. I couldn’t help but smile as I responded back. I was excited to be talking with a close family friend again, and he was one who always kept the conversation intellectual, yet stimulating. Every time we talked, his discussions always left some kind of life lesson for me to think about. He was a person who enjoyed sharing his knowledge, and he still respected the thoughts of others no matter how much he disagreed. Overall, he was quite easy to get along with, and I knew he would …show more content…
“So first off, what would you identify your career as, or what do you want to be known as?” I asked him. In response, he replies, “An entrepreneur.” I actually already knew much about him, since we’ve been friends for so long. His name is Aron Collins; he runs part of a franchise, known as Comfort Keepers, in two different locations in Texas. Its specialty is in-home care for the elderly, and Mr. Collins has been quite successful in building his business up. When he first became the owner of a company, I remember when he had to live with he and his wife –(read this and tell me if it makes sense to you) had to live with his sister-in-law. He even told me once how his salary consisted of less than a dollar a day. However, he now lives in a comfy house with his wife and his young daughter. He was always an optimistic, motivated guy who does whatever has to be done. Additionally, he doesn’t just do office work at his desk and interview possible employees—if he needs to, he’s also willing fill in as a caregiver and do the odd-jobs (which sometimes entails bathing senior citizens or driving them around to assist in their …show more content…
Collins actually enjoys writing for his career. It doesn’t seem like a chore or bother to him at all, and he explains it as “good for the mind.” When I inquired if he bases potential workers off of their writing skills, he answered without a moment of hesitation. “Yes, absolutely. Everyone who applies is required to write a cover letter for their resume.” A cover letter basically conveys extra information about the person, or goes over the contents of their resume. I feel like there’s no necessity for the previous line It’s the first thing that an employer sees, and could even decide whether the person is right for the job or not. If their cover letter doesn’t meet Mr. Collins’s expectations, or impress him, he will most likely not even consider them for the job. He goes on describing one woman in particular, who stood out from the rest. “She wrote one of the best cover letters I’ve ever seen,” he explains, “and now she’s my Director of Professional Relations.” After Mr. Collins hired her, she took over the job of promoting the business, proving to be quite successful at it. He even wrote her a letter of recommendation, confirming her skill and experience. With this she was accepted into a special, community-centered program known as Leadership

It was a bright sunny Saturday morning, waking up hearing the birds chirping outside. The sun was shining through the windows throughout the house. When I heard the phone ring the first time, it was around ten o’clock in the morning; I looked over to see my mom running to the home phone that used to sit on the desk in the laundry room. It rang three times before my mom answered.…

The next morning, I saw the newspaper while I was eating breakfast. On the front page, there was a story about a young boy who saved a woman’s life. She was going to walk into her house and end herself, but he smiled and waved at her from across the street. He ran over to her and asked her how her day was, in a completely mundane conversation, which led to her talking to him for hours. His mere existence on that day and in that place changed her whole perspective, resulting in her deciding to spare her life for the hope that she could help others like her.…

3 AM I’m a young, unexperienced high school student trying to figure out where I fit in this world… country… town... life. After tossing many ideas around in my head, in my heart, and with my parents, I finally feel good about a direction I plan to pursue. Most careers in the health field look good to me because of the appearance of these positions. In the health field, you have a stable job, decent pay, varying amounts of education, many different departments to choose from, and opportunities to work your way up and grow. I’ve jumped from Surgical Technician, to more of a nursing direction.…
